My water bottles drip and make a huge mess. So I hooked up empty extra food dishes under the water bottle to catch any dripping water. Its working great so far. Has anybody else tried this before?

I used to do this, then Furby started using teh bowl as a tolet as well.. it got really discusting, so now I have a litterbox in the corner with a waterbottle over it, and that works great, I clean it out ever day (furbs will pretty much only pee in her litterbox) so that takes care of pee and the watebottle drips, and I scoup up any stray poopies then too, sorta like spot cleaning except I'm not real thurough (sp?) Just sort of like a tidy up in the morning.

you guys can also place a brick under the water bottle to absorb the drips. also trimms down the piggies nails.

yup I think I saw that in the photo galleries before

Yea I used a brick outside. I like the brick but Im limited on space at the moment because its winter. My pigs are in 1x3's on towels until I get my coroplast. Its working pretty good for me. I clean them out when they get dirty and it stops the dripping from soaking my towels.

Re: Water bottle leaks

My water bottle leaks as well. Has anyone found one that does not? We have personally been through different sizes, holders and manufacturers. Just spent $13.00 on one from Earl May. Doesn't seem to be as bad--has no ball in the water tube, instead it has some wire type thing. Easy to fill and clean as the top of the water bottle when hanging on the cage just slides off and also flips in half for easy feeling. What is the brick that was mentioned to soak up the drips? Is it just a normal red brick or something special? Thanks for the advice and info. in advance.

Can the piggies not use the brick, or anything else in the cage for that matter, as a step to get out of the cage. I do have a dog, but he would just bark the poor thing to death. I still do not want it to get out in the house unsupervised.

I had that bottle. It leaked so bad I threw it out and got the normal ball type water bottle. The ones I have now don't leak bad enough to cause a problem. I tried the dish thing too but it got very gross with the poops in it.

I have a patio brick, it's about 12"x12", it's not in their cage right now but it will be when the weather gets warmer. It's only about an inch thick. The grid walls are 14" high so even if they step on a brick that's 1" or 2" thick it would be pretty hard for them to get out. There are a few pigs that will climb up and over the grids or climb on top of a hidey house and jump over the grids but most don't.

I only had one incident of one of my girls, Chatty, getting out and she got out of the pet playpen but I had put her in there with nothing else at the time. It was a few days after I got her and I put her in the playpen and went to get stuff to put in there for her to play with, when I came back she was just about over the top. Once she had things in there, she never tried that again and I sure learned to put the toys and hay in there first!

Shell29, it sounds as though your going to need to build a enclosed c&c cage so your dog can't get to the pigs and vise versa.

I have this water bottle and I swear by it! It has never leaked except for when your pigs play with it. It's is moderatly priced too.

These water bottles work very very well too.Sorry that it is petsmart. They sell these everywhere though, they work great!

I have tried so many different water bottles it's not even funny! They all drip.
I too have put the dish just under the water bottle to catch the drips. In two of our cages they work really well, but in the third cage, our two girls were using the dish to pee in. I was wiping it out several times a day, then thought that I would try moving the water bottle and dish to a different corner of the cage and problem solved, the girls continued peeing in the area the dish had been in and now the only thing in the dish is the bit of water that drips from the bottle.
I finally got some bottles at Wal-Mart that don't drip as bad as the rest. They are just a generic pet waterer. They come in different colors, blue, green and red. They were one of the least exspensive to buy too. I have tried the flip top, the floating ducky, the one with the wire in the tube, the blue ones from PetsMart, you name it and I have found these to be the best water bottles as far as not leaking goes.

Thanks for all the advice. I did get rid of my flip-top waterer last night. It didn't drip as long as it was straight up and down, but it just poured water out when the piggies try to drink, making more of a mess than the others dripping. I have the bowl (which I had to add that sticky automotive tape to--the tape for adding moldings, etc on cars. I put it on the bottom and pushed it onto the cage. This stopped the ornery little guys from pushing the bowl around.) Went back to the cheap bottle from Wal-Mart.

I have one of those generic red water bottles and a smaller clear one from Wal-Mart. They haven't leaked at all.

I got mine with the cage (soon to be replaced with CC). It doesn't leek at all except when my pigies use it. I'm talking here about 5-10 drops the most every time they drink. Sometimes none :) It's getting better and better since they get use to it over time.

I want to buy another one but couldn't find it in the USA.

It is made by Marchioro (IT) and can be purchased in the UK and few other Europian countries.
It is easy to attach/detach to the cage on the outside and you can refill it from the top.

On petsmart.com they have these Oasis Cage Floor mats for sale in the i think accessories section in the guinea pig shop. They look like they would work...

The bad thing about those things is that they have holes in them so the water would just fall threw.

I've written in here before about water bottles leaking. I had lots of advice and thank everyone for it! I tried putting empty food bowls under the bottle but my piggies started using it as a toilet area too. And I do agree.......very nasty! I bought several different types of bottles from $2 to $16 and they all leaked. My firm belief is that the ones that don't seem to leak at first, will overtime. It's like they seem to get worn out or something. So...this is what we did. My husband drilled a hole in an extra food dish and screwed it to a piece of flat metal of some sort (no sharp edges, etc. it's safe). The pigs cannot tip it over because of the metal piece under it. It does not leak, but I suppose if it would all you would have to do is put some sealer on the bottom of the bowl between the bowl and the metal. And my bigs have not ever used it as a toilet! Explain that one! ha They drink out of it great and have no problems. Our youngest one in fact sometimes washes his face with his paws! Very cute.

I haven't found one that doesn't leak. I use a 6"x12" concrete patio brick that is about an inch thick. it works great! It absorbs the water and the buns like to lay on it because it's cool.

I tried the cup under the water bottle but they always move it around. I have also used hangable bird food/water cups. My bun liked to sleep under the cup.

Sometimes they leak because they are dirty and the ball can sit in the right place.Or piggies chew on them

That's the kind I just got 'cause I thought it would be easier but it makes a HUGE mess of my pigs cage, so I tired to put a cup under it but it leaked so bad that I had to dump the cup out every hour then it just over flowed and made a bigger mess.
