Quite a long time ago I read that you can't have a guinea pig in the room with the tv on because the tv produces a high pitched sound that guinea pigs can hear and we cannot.
As a result I have never, ever had them in the same room when the tv is on.
However I can't help noticing that many people do sit with their guinea pigs to watch tv.

Is what I read correct? I am not sure? I still won't have them watching tv unless I know for apsolute certain that this is untrue.

I have never heard that. That is interesting and I'd like to know if that is true or not too. My five piggies are in the basement in the TV room area and my Dad is always down there watching TV with the volume up really loud and it doesn't seem to bother them. In fact it has actually helped them not be so skiddish as they were when I first got them, they are very used to the noise. Not too long ago I was holding my piggy Cotton for lap time and was watching an episode of The Incredible Dr. Pol and one of the animals on there, I think it was a Donkey, made a noise and Cotton started wheeking at the TV and looking around for the animal that made the noise, it was so funny and cute at the same time.

I have a living room/dining room combo and the TV is in the living room and the piggies are in the dining room so they are exposed to the TV being on almost all the time. They will watch it when I have them out for lap time. It doesn't seem to bother them, except sometimes they make keep away sounds at certain noises, like ringing, bells, clanging, radar pings. Penny also makes keep away sounds when I type on my iPhone, it's funny.

My pigs are in the TV room and it doesn't bother them in the slightest. The little one always wheeks when a door closes on TV, because she thinks it's me bringing veggies :D

I've never heard that, and when I had my first piggy, Mufasa, I'd watch TV with him in the evening and he never seemed to be bothered by it. That little guy was a cuddler, and he had no reaction at all to the TV sound.

So I could actually watch a movie with a guinea pig on my lap? That would be so cool! I've always wanted to but never did it.

The little one always wheeks when a door closes on TV, because she thinks it's me bringing veggies :D

It was a concern with older tvs and people who built rodent cages into their entertainment center around the tv. Even then it was never completely proven to be a problem. Having an animal just in the room with a tv should not do anything.

LCD TVs have no flyback transformer, so no high pitched squealing sound. I could always hear it and it drove me insane... CRT TVs couldn't go away fast enough.

So LCD=OK, CRT=drove me nuts, wouldn't inflict it on a pig.

On the other hand, my pigs no longer even react when I vacuum, so they seem pretty adaptable to noise level as long as it's constant and not sudden.

I have almost always had my guinea pigs in a room with a tv, and it never bothered them at all. Although they didn't like strange noises, they start growling if a bell rings, a clang, a doorbell, or any other loud noise.

Just remember to take pee precautions if you watch TV with your piggy. Mufasa was actually great about holding it, even though he was young, and Amy is too. Quinn, however, will let it fly so I keep her on a couple of towels or a towel with a puppy pad underneath. She is a Pee Queen.

I frequently watch tv with a pig on my lap, they never seem bothered by it. They can also hear the tv from where the cage it. Once and in a while they'll wheek at a noise on the tv (the tardis dematerializing specifically) but they wheek at my radiator so I don't if the noise bugged them or if they were trying to communicate.
