Just on my way to pick up some vitamin c tablets for the girls . I was wondering if there was any particular brand recomended .Thanks

I got mine from a health food store. No name brand. Just read the ingredients and make sure there is nothing else added. I got fruit flavored which usually your piggy will love. It probably will contain a minute amount of sugar. Check out the contents.

I suggest finding Oxbow's. (broken link removed).

actually critterstore.com has them for much cheaper than the oxbow site.

I only gave her that to show her the product, yes it is cheaper at The Critter Store, but if it is all she wants, she might as well find it at a pet store.

I know it makes no sense to by just tablets so buy your oxbow and other things with it.

Any good plain Vitamin C tablet with little to no sugar is suitable. Health food stores are one of your best options for finding the proper tablets. Oxbow's Vit. C tablets may be the best, but everyone needs to remember that not everyone can order what they need to online.

Thanks evryone !

Would 200 mg/day of Vitamin C be too much? Our vet prescribed that for one of our pigs who had a bad case of pneumonia. But that would be 4 Oxbow tablets a day (oh and thanks a lot for the Oxbow tip, didn't know they made that). Is this too much?

I see you posted this at gl. I am going to let them answer this question because there are many medical experts there. I will keep an eye on the threads both here and there and one of us can post the answer here so the rest of cavycages members will know. Personally, I believe that 50mg a day is sufficient for ill piggies.

I use a liquid form... Make sure it doesn't have anything else in it.

Um you are suppose to give them vitamin C pills? I never knew are they good?

They don't need vit c tablets in most cases. Generally they can get plenty of vit c if you are feeding daily veggies. Sick guinea pigs can benefit from extra vit c and it's hard to overdose on it so there's no harm in giving more. However research has shown unlike previously thought it is possible to overdose the symptoms of which are an increased chance of stones. Like I said though it's very hard to do. Oxbow tablets are 50mg and the suggested by them is 1 tablet a day. More if the guinea pig is sick or stressed. One other case they may need more than what they get in veggies is if you live in an area of little sunlight such as far up north. There was a thread on gl discussing it once and a few people were saying vegetables grown in that area have less vit c than ones grown in areas of the world that get more light.

guineapigluvr14, where do you get your liquid Vitamin C? I finally found some at an organic food store, but when I looked at the ingredients I balked. The 3 brands of liquid C all had glycerine and sorbitol (probably are sweeteners for flavoring), along with lemon/orange flavor. I didn't know if these would be good for guinea pigs. Where can you get pure liquid Vitamin C?

Also, after searching on guinealynx and here, I've been worried that 200 mg/day might be excessive (especially after reading this research report found on the gl thread: (broken link removed)).

Thanks I now know about this.

Have you tried a health food store? You can use liquid C but make sure it's the kind that you give them directly and not put in the water. Flavoring is ok, but it should have <1 gram of sugar, preferrably no sugar. I noticed they haven't found your question in the thread at gl yet.

Vitamin C tablets can be given. Some pigs think they are candy and gobble them up. Some pigs don't like them so you have to get creative on giving it. You can crush it and sprinkle it on veggies or crush it and mix with water and syringe it.

Thanks Ly. I'm pretty sure I will get the Oxbow Vitamin C tablets since they're supposed to be tailored for guinea pigs, plus I trust Oxbow's quality (we use their hay and pellets). What do you think about the 200 mg/day, though?

It's too much. I would give 50mg to a sick piggie per day.

I got some liquid Vit c at the vet today, I had laid off giving vit c as all I had was the type you put in the water and I read that was bad so I've been giving them plenty of vc rich veggies. But my poor new piggie has URI, not chocolatte, Peaches N Cream, so when I took her to the vet today we talked about vit c and he gave me a presciption of liquid vit c and told me to give 2.5 cc a day to each piggy. Its sweet, tastes like candy, and supposedly they would fight over the syringe. Yup they did. I have 5 piggies and only one did I have to pick up and when she got the first taste of it she laid still and perfect. Good news for my sick piggy for all who are worried, she is on bactim, is very active still, and eating like a horse. I think she is gonna be just fine, she is a sparky little one and took a nap with me on the bed today still bright eyed as ever. Also, the prescription he gave me was very inexpensive.. only a few bucks and you would spend that on the cheap water soluble stuff. Give your vet a call it may actually save you some money

Wheekwheek

WheekWheek, did the vet recommend a probiotic? If not you need to give one to restore the normal gut flora that bactrim will strip away. You can either take a poo from a healthy pig and mash it with some water and syringe feed it or get some acidopholous capsules and sprinkle it on the veggies.
