I have a sorta silly question, I wanna add vinigar to my washer when I wash the fleece and underbedding but where do I add it? Do I put it in with the detergent, or in the bleech slot, or in the fabric softener slot or do I pour it over the fleece and bedding?

...Also this is a lil off topic, I just wanted to tell everyone that I added onto my cage! I made it a 2x8, I'll post pics very soon in the gallery.

I just pour the vinager into the laundry with the soap as the water is filling. It seems to work well in getting the smell out of my fleece.

I use regular laundry detergent and then put a cup of white vinegar in the rinse cycle container.

Sorry for sounding like a newbie, but what benefit is there to put vinegar into the wash with the bedding?

Vinegar in the softner compartment helps to remove traces of detergent, which could possibly cause irritation to sensitive pigs skin.

It also helps with odor control and disinfecting.

So it's better to put it in the compartment than to just pour right on top of the laundry?

There are a lot of reasons why one might use vinegar in the laundry - especially in our case - for our guinea pig's bedding.

The main reason I use it is to decrease yellowing of the towels and fleeces. Obviously - when they are urinating directly on this fabric there will be some yellowing. Vinegar is an excellent stain remover. I actually ran out of vinegar last time I did the guinea pig bedding wash and figured - oh well it'll be fine once. And I'll tell you I noticed a difference in the color of the towels afterwards. I could see trace remnants of pee stains whereas when I washed with vinegar there were no signs left of staining!

The other obvious reason to use it - A single cup of vinegar will kill off any bacteria that may be present in your wash load, especially if it includes cloth diapers (or guinea pig cage bedding) and the like.

Vinegar also works as a clothes softener and reduce static!

Kiss your bleaches, brighteners and softeners goodbye!

So let me get this right: I can put vinegar in the detergent compartment, vinegar in the softener compartment and vinegar directly on the laundry, and this will clean without the need for detergent?

No, you would still want detergent but you can put the vinegar into the cycle anytime that you want to. I think right away with the detergent is best because it gets a longer time to work.

What do you guys think of putting baking soda in the wash? I used to use it all the time as a detergent booster and it also helped soften the fabrics and get rid of odours. I'm assuming it'd be fine as I've read you can use it to clean the cage but I just thought I'd ask to make sure! Gonna need all the help I can get fighting static when I switch to fleece! So dry here with the furnace running :p

Hi - I put the vinegar in the fabric softener spot. When the machine goes into the rinse cycle, the vinegar is dispensed. I find it works out great. No pee smell. I also put the fleece in the dryer, just on "fluff." No shrinkage, but it does help to dry it.
