So I've read mixed things on vibrating/purring noise that comes along with it. Some say they are irritated when they do that and others say they are happy. Can it mean both depending on the situation? How do I tell the difference?

It depends on the situation. When my boys do it during snuggle time and have their legs streached out and eyes closed they are very happy. When they are in each others face and do it not so happy!

Purring is usually when their happy.
Like how cats purr when they like someone.

Vibrating is usually growling.
Growling is usually when their angry.
For example, if you see an animal growl you'll notice their whole body shakes with it.

They purr while your petting them, or giving them treats.
They growl when their mad, or if he's growling to another Piggie he is trying to set it straight that it's his territory.

If they growl, just give them a treat or love.
It's a common noise, and it's nothing to worry about unless it causes fights between the guinea pigs or if it bites you.

hope this helped.

hmmmm ok, sometimes she randomly does it in her cage but the past 2 days when I go to pick her up for either lap or floor time she does that. This morning I left her in her cage because she kinda though her head at me and I didn't want her to bite me if she was annoyed. She is always fine once she is out though, she starts squeaking really happily. I've had her for almost 3 weeks now and she just started doing this so i'm trying to figure it out why.

well, do you have more than one guinea pig?

No I just have the one. I dunno because I'll go over to the cage and she'll be vibrating and I'll be stroking her head and when I stop she starts popcorning and squeaking, yet to me she seems upset when I pick her up. Which I know a lot of guinea pigs don't like it, I'm just curious because it just started.

You know, our guinea pig does something kinda like that, and I was wondering what it meant. He makes some kind of purring or chattering noise, only when I pet him on his sides. He kinda stretches out a little and gets stiff and makes that noise. I dont hold him there though, so I figured if he didnt like it, he would walk away, right? Makes me a little nervous sometimes, cause I dont know if hes happy or mad....:?:

Yeah same here! haha If he stretches out and seems relaxed then I think it is a good thing though.

Ben purrs all the time when he is pet. He's such a sweetie. I took some video of it a while back. You can hear him purr until my kids start making noise then the iPhone focuses in on them. lol Got to love technology!

Oh my how adorable is that ?! Ben is definitely lovin' his pets, he is definitely purring in delight !!

Thank you so MUCH for sharing your sweet video of Ben ! It certainly IS confusing to understand all their cute noises !

That does sound like her but she always vibrates too haha thanks for that video though it was helpful!

Sometimes he also chews his teeth too, not the teeth chattering just chewing. He's a super loving guinea pig. We all love Ben!
