So I have been searching all over for ways to prevent mites, and one site suggested a monthly bath with Vet Sect Repel shampoo. Says that the Cavy Trust in the UK recommends it and gave a link to the company that makes it. ((broken link removed)).

My question is two-fold. One has anyone used it, and two can you find it in the U.S.?

Use ivermectin. Mites are dormant and exist on every pig. They only become active in times of stress. So to prevent it, use a preventative dose of ivermectin and keep your pigs out of stressful siduations. Do not use a powder or medicated bath. Baths are generally for fungas.

Ivermectin is really your best bet with mites. Pigs can be treated if you only suspect they have mites, without a definate diagnosis and it doesn't hurt them if they don't have mites. It's not a good idea to use any medicated shampoos on pigs unless they have fungus and then there are specific shampoos to use.
