I need some suggestions for my disgusting little freak, Maple Leaf. He needs his fleece and kitchen changed more often than the others. In the kitchen, I have a liner that I change every 1 or 2 days. Maple Leaf LOVES to go under the liner and play, poop, and pee. Due to this, he tends to pee in one corner under the liner. It makes the fleece (the big piece for the whole cage) stiff and smells like ammonia very fast. I have to change the entire liner due to this, instead of just changing the kitchen part. He also gets pee and poop stuck in the coroplast of that one corner. I have tried adding additional corner liners and puppy pads, but he always finds a way to ruin it. Sometimes I don't always catch this mess in time, and he ends up sleeping under the liner most likely breathing in that ammonia. Luckily none of this has made him sick. Is there some sort of layout or additional item I could add to his cage to make his habits easier to live with?

As a note, he is the only one who does this. While his brother next to him (Talwar) also plays under the liner, he only goes potty in one spot of the cage and is my cleanest pig.

You need to keep him from getting under the liner. While he's under there, he's breathing the fumes from his pee and poop, and that's not healthy for him.

You can put small fleece pads in the places where he potties the most, and change them more frequently than the rest of the cage.

If you find a way to un-stiffen that piece of fleece, please tell me. I have one pee pad that is permanently stiffened even after going through the wash multiple times, and I can't figure out how to make it soft again :ROFLMAO:

As for preventing Maple Leaf from going under the fleece, I'd try something like this: https://pawinspired.com/products/critter-box-washable-guinea-pig-cage-liner-with-raised-sides. And I would add additional binder clips to really make it impossible to go under, since my girls were still managing to use their little paws to fold down the sides and make it under the big fleece.

I wash it with a free n clear detergent and warm water. Recently I started adding vinegar again. I've had no issues 'reversing' the stiffness.

Maybe warm water is the trick, I'll try that next week when I do laundry again. I just ran it through the wash with extra vinegar, and the stiff spot is still there. It's been bugging me for about a year now 😭
