I had an idea for a treat for my piggies. I was wondering, could I chop up piggie safe veggies, freeze them in ice cube trays, and give the piggies the ice cubes during the summer?

I'd be using my food processor, so they'd be chopped up very fine and most likely freeze into a solid, if not slightly gross looking cubes. I'd most likely put things in them like green and red bell pepper, red leaf lettuce, romaine lettuce, etc. So just their normal diet, but in frozen cube shape.

Why not just give them the veggies in their natural form? I don't really see the need for the extra steps.

You could try it, doesn't seem like it would harm them. I wouldn't just cause' I'm lazy

I don't think they'd see the ice cube as a treat.

Mine have never turned down anything to eat. They see everything as a treat. I'm too lazy to go to extra work to give them a chunk of veggie they'd have readily taken out of my hand.

That sounds like a great idea! Perfect refreshing treat for a summer day. Just make sure you defrost them a bit so they're easier for the piggies to eat. It's funny, some others don't really understand making special things for your piggies just because it's a fun thing to try. I love making all sorts of creative things for my pets! I'll definitely try it out this summer!

I'm the same way WheekingPiggies! I know it's a little extra work, but I don't mind it :) I make my cat tuna treats all the time. Yeah, they take some extra time and they make my house smell like fish, but he loves them and that's good enough reason for me!
I'll remember to defrost them :)

The mixture I think I'm starting out with is red leaf lettuce, green bell pepper, and a little bit of carrot. Because that's what in my fridge. And I know they love carrot lol.

Speaking from experience with vegetables passed through a food processor then frozen, expect it to be incredibly messy. I do the frozen processed veg for when I am hand raising birds, and given how messy it is with the birds I can only imagine the mess my guinea pigs would make with it.

Personally I have never tried offering it to my guinea pigs not only due to the imagined mess it would make but also because my guinea pigs are not fond of eating anything that has been frozen, I have tried a few whole frozen then semi-defrosted treats (capsicum, zucchini, tomato - all things they typically love) and they would take one bite then spit it out and then run back to the side of the cage and beg for the "real" treat that I must be hiding. Even after leaving the veg chunks in the cage for an hour, by which time they would have been thoroughly thawed, it would still be untouched aside from the one bite which was still sitting on the ground where they spat it out.

I admit it was a bit messy, but I think anything with a food processor is.

My piggies had different opinions. Tyrion wouldn't touch it, although he's always been the picky one of the two so I didn't think he did. But Olena seemed to love it. I put one in for each of them, and she wasted no time collecting both and taking them into one of their hides. She ate both of them and came looking for more.

I'll just have to find something else for Tyr's treat :)

I could understand doing this as a treat once in a while for summer but not to replace the daily food. They will miss the chewing and just like us stay more hungry. Have you ever notice if you eat a 400 calories cup of icecream not after a meal, you aren't really full and may scrounge around in 20 minutes for something else, you mind missed the chewing experience. But if you ate a small apple, some baby carrots and a half of sandwich that equaled 400 calories, you will feel food not only from the volume of food but the amount of chewing that came with it.

For a real treat, freeze some cut up strawberries, watermelon rind with some water melon on it, wash the rind( mine will eat these.) Corn on the cob inner leaves and silks.

I found that my piggies absolutely love frozen blueberries. It's funny because they don't even like blueberries normally. I would probably freeze whole pieces of fruits and veggies rather than blending it up, since it's easier and less messy.

Mine only eat the frozen watermelon and strawberries. I never tried blueberries as they don't like them. They do(yeah I am bad) like strawberry and pineapple outshine bars. They like grapes but not frozen. Its a hit and miss.

I'll look at blueberries :) Olena will eat strawberries but Tyrion won't. Maybe he'll like blueberries.

To be honest feeding Tyr in general can be a pain. He's pretty picky.
