I need some info on UTIs. I did search GL but I'd like some more info.

What are the symptoms? Common cures(like what antibiotics exactly)? And just some basic info and some of your own experience's.

What does bladder sludge look like?

Could the same kind of symptoms(like crying while urinating)mean something else like mammory glands?

Thanks all for any input beforehand.

Symptoms would be straining or vocalizing during urination, possible blood in the urine if the infection is advanced. I think Baytril would be prescribed but that depends on your vet. These same symptoms could be indicative of bladder (kidney) stones.

Not sure about the mammary glands, are they inflamed or something?

Symptoms are:
squeaking when urinating/ passing pellets
Blood in urine
In pain or discomfort while urinating/ p.p

I saw on Guinealynx that it could also be stones.. Which are cured with surgery.
Medications for UTI-
Bactrim/Tribissen- for younger cavies.

I'm not sure what to use for older cavies- sorry!

Thanks for the input!

Are there other words for Baytril? Anymore ideas/info?

How can you tell when a cavy is in pain? And earlier by mammory glands I meant tumours.

How long is treatment and how much? How is medication given?

Try this link if you already haven't:
https://guinealynx.info/findingavet.html

It has some information on what is better for older pigs with URIs. Because Baytril is used on URIs, and it states other medicines to use.

The "technical" name for Baytril is Enrofloxacin. Ideally, Baytril is only used in adult pigs.

The "technical" name for Bactrim is Trimethoprim sulfa. It is also called SMZ-TMP, Tribrissen, Septra and sulfamethoxazole trimethoprim. It is known to be especially effective on urinary tract infections and is safer for younger pigs.

This information is all available here at GL: https://www.guinealynx.info/medications.html#antibiotics

When my Rodney had an UTI, bactrim worked better than baytril. He got all "puffed" up, squealed in pain and had blood in his urine. His appetite was poor because of the pain. After two days on baytril with no improvement, the vet switched to bactrim, sub q fluids and metacam for the pain. I saw improvement within 48 hrs.

Thanks!

What about these though..

Or something requiring a spay.

What could be the cause of white/yellow 'residue'?

Sorry, but this may be found VERY innapropriate and I ALWAYS say it when my friends talk about something disgusting... but....

YUMMY...

How old was Rodney? Bactrim is better for younger cavies.

This happens because the extra calcium your pigs body doesn't need is passed out through the urine causing it to turn white. One way to possibly tell if your pig has bladder sludge is to feel the white spots after they are dried. If it feels gritty, then chances are pretty good the pig has sludge. If it feels smooth, no sludge.

If you notice many white spots from urine, it's time to cut down on some of the high calcium veggies.

Magic Taco, that comment you posted was totally unnecessary and rather gross. Please keep those types of comments to yourself in the future.

I've found alot of white spots. It seems everytime she urinates the urine comes with white. I have cut down on high calcium foods too. Does cucumber have a high calcium content? I was feeding that daily but then I stoppped because I wasn't sure. I haven't fed many dandelion greens either. Oh! What about tomatoes? I'll go check GL in a second.

I'm thinking it might be her pellets. I'm weaning her off her old yucky food mix so she's still eating some of that and her pellets.

And I think she was wheeking while peeing or was it pooing..? I'm so worried because I don't even have loads of money to spend on vet bills(I know bad but I haven't had time to save up). Plus I'm going on a bunch of little trips and a week long one all this month and some of next so I don't know how I'd give her meds.

Ugh! I'm so confused. I've been watching her and it seems she's got everything. I'm not even being paranoid. I also found a scab on her but it fell off and there's a tiny spot of no hair. She still has an appetite and explores during floortime. Why doesn't she run much when I go to pick her up? And she doesn't struggle either..except a few times.

She may be sick especially if she is squealing/squeaking when she has to use the bathroom. If she is ill, that explains why she isn't running much or struggling when you are picking her up. What all are you feeding her right now? I need a full list of what foods your giving so I can help you figure out what to cut down on or eliminate.

He He, oops.
I'm sorry... I guess I had to say it, I say it so much around the house and with my friends when they talk about stuff really disgusting... I don't know...*Slaps wrist*

I feed her..

Timothy Hay
Fresh Grass
Occasionally Clovers(is that what they're called?)with the little white flowers
Sometimes dandelion greens
I recently bought Romaine
And I feed this green lettuce with red/purple tips/ends
She always gets plain green lettuce, I'm not sure what kind it is yet. Butterhead maybe?

Tomatoes
Cucumber
Bell Pepper
Dill
Carrot

I think that's it.

How often can carrot tops be fed? I got a bag of those.

There is nothing wrong with using Bactrim for older cavies. It is true that it is safer than Baytril to use in younger pigs.

Looking over your list, the only things I see that have more calcium than the rest are dandelion greens and dill. How often do you feed each of those foods? And give me an idea of how much you feed when you feed them. I would say 2-3 times a week on the carrot tops and maybe only a 2-3 tops at a time. Carrots and the tops have a lot of Vitamin A in them.

Dandelion greens only a medium sized leaf every other to every fourth day. I was feeding dill daily but I haven't for a week now.
