I was in Ephrata at the Green Dragon farmers market deal, when I wandered into "The barnyard" to look at the farm animals. I noticed some boxes on tables, so I looked inside and they were filled with piggies! There were about 20 boxes full of anywhere between 2-10 pigs each box, and apparently they are all for auction tonight. There were also bunnies, doves and some chickens, all in these tiny boxes. I walked out when I noticed that there was a tiny baby guinea pig lying on the floor under the stairs near a mans feet- someone had stepped on it without thinking twice. I went back in after being calmed down by my husband, and I was going to attempt a small scale rescue (I was going to take the pigs in my hoodie pockets) but I apparently attracted too much attention and the farmers were all over me. I don't know if anyone from that area is on here, but those pigs need help! I overheard an old geezer bragging that osmeone had brought in over 150 himself, and that there were probably a total of close to 200!! I ended up leaving in tears.

Are there any rescues, Humane Society/other shelters, or ASPCA that you could contact about these pigs?

I don't know anything in that area. I also don't know if it's a legal thing that they are doing... it's a livestock auction.

I called the lancaster humane society and spoke with a woman there. I reported them for animal cruelty and she told me that she would alert the animal cruelty officer and that it would be followed up on. I am going to keep on this and will try to go up there every week and take pictures and I will even try to get it on the news and try to get them shut down.

That's horrible! I'm a little too far from Lancaster, or I'd help you out. Keep us updated.

Oh my gosh! That is horrible! He stepped on it?! Please keep us updated on what happens. I live about an hour away from Lancaster, and Ephrata is actually near where we got our dog last year, (from a breeder.) Those poor pigs...

That is truely sad. I hope someone shuts down that pig mill and no pigs have to suffer from dumb people who do not know how to properly keep pigs!

Have you also tried the ASPCA? Here's a link:
ASPCA: Fight Cruelty: Report Animal Cruelty

I hope this helps. I have seen pictures taken in a barn in Pennsylvania that made me so sick. Imagine the worst wreck of a building with masses of guinea pigs, many sick & dying or already dead, crawling across junk, insulation, you name it. No heat no water or food. People found out & shut it down & rescued over a hundred piggies. Many didn't make it & many were so badly injured they had to be put to sleep. Of the ones that survived, some of those piggies ended up at the CT rescue & I met them today. Oh, and please don't think that I'm picking on or singling out Pennsylvania, a beautiful state, it's a coincidence, but the piggies you saw were probably raised in places like that barn.

If you need help, support, etc. let us know what we can do. Oh, I adopted a neutered male today. This little guy is from New York & just as sweet as he could be.

The bad thing is, you saw what they were seliing for that night. They sell Guinea Pigs and Bunnies by the box often. I've talked about this place after my fiance' told me about it. Its sad when people buy from petstores cause thats where these babies will probably end up.

What is probably going to happen is that I am going to have to start having Fridays as a scheduled day off, just to make the hour and a half trip to Ephrata to check it out and call the SPCA. I am going to start taking my camera and taking pictures and sending them to newspapers locally. I've also thought about calling and speaking to WGAL which is a lancaster news station, and seeing if I could generate enough interest for them to come in with camera and reporter in tow and do a segment on animal creulty in peoples backyards. If nothing else, I am now on a mission to get that auction area shut down. I wasn't even aware it was there, and I've been to GD several times.

Wow, that is so cruel.

It's nice knowing there are people like you who are willing to do something about it. Good for you! :)
