The pads won't shred if you encase them in fleece........or it will at least take much longer and you won't be aware of it. I have been using the same three sets of liners that I made more than two years ago. They are just now beginning to show signs of wear as evidenced by the stains on the pads under them. The fleece still looks good, but apparently the uHaul pad in the middle is wearing out.
I don't understand about your complaint that they smell? I wash all my cavy items with All Free & Clear and Oxyclean and don't detect an odor. About once per month, I launder them with All and bleach. Fleece is remarkably resistant to bleach, and it freshens and brightens the appearance. I washed my predominantly black liners with bleach just yesterday.
I don't want to encase them in fleece. I am debating whether or not I want the blue or grey one. I wanted the blue because the grey one shreds and shrinks a lot when not encased. Also for me, it stinks extremely bad and no matter what I wash it in- bleach, vinegar, etc, it doesn't get the smell out. Why don't you think the blue ones would be good? The outer part is a 50/50 poly/ cotton blend, and on the inside it is cotton fiber batting.
Having handled the quilted uHaul pads, I just don't think that you will be happy with them. I'll look at them a gain tomorrow and see if my opinion still stands.
