What breed? Two Breeds from One Mom?

Our sister piggies, Piper and Pepper, were born from the same mom, a shorthair, on November 27. They came from a rescue.

Piper is clearly Abyssinian, with the funky little hair whorls all over her. She is petite and has a dominant personality.

Pepper, on the other hand, has a bit longer nose, is built a little stockier, and is submissive, more timid. She does not have whorls all over her, but has a pronounced ridge of hair, almost like a mohawk, running right down her spine.

Yes, these girls came from the same mom. I don't know what kind of piggy the dad was, and I am curious as to what breed Pepper might be, assuming a recessive gene somewhere. Would appreciate any/all opinions, as well as places I can look to see comparisons. Thanks very much.

She could be a Ridgeback. They look like stocky Americans with hair that stands up along the spine. Can you upload a photo?

Not sure how to do that for the forum and she just peed all over my lap. Could you lead me to a site with a photo of a ridgeback?

Google "ridgeback guinea pig"

I just did that--googled. It is exactly the way Pepper looks. Is it possible for a shorthair mom to have an abyssinian AND a ridgeback in the same litter?

Guinea pig breeds aren't the same as dog breeds. The different breeds of guinea pigs have more to do with hair style than anything else. Even rabbit breeds differ more than guinea pig breeds so it is very possible to have 2 different "breeds" come from one mom.

I have a ridgeback too! His name is Ben. (Upload photos click on the little box with a tree in it and follow the directions on the popup box) :)

Yes, there can be different breed guinea pigs in the same litter.

I don't have any good photos yet---still working on it. But she definitely looks like the ridgeback that I found on Google Images.

I believe I have a "ridgeback" piggy also.
She looks like what you described your pig as, but is more petite than my American Crested pig. She is more submissive as well, keeps to herself and loves people.
Calypso: She has a bit of a bedhead style all the time hehe

Mine are sisters from the same litter -- one's an American short hair, with a little extra long hair, and the other is a wild-haired abby.

OKay, Thanks for letting me know mixed breeds in litters is possible. I am convinced Pepper is a ridgeback because of the line of hair all the way down her spine. Is there a place where I can go to see the assorted breeds of guinea pigs? I have heard and read about so many and I would like to see for myself. Google "guinea pig breeds"? Will that work?

Wikipedia has a decent description of breeds, both common and the more rare:

This one has photos: (broken link removed)

I'm horrible at figuring out what mine might be. I figure they're just good ol' American Shorthaired mutts, like my cats :) They both have ridges/rosettes/whatever you want to call them on top of their heads, which you can see in the photos. Squishy, the brown one, could be a white crested if not for the white nose and crazy Pai Mei eyebrows :)
