Hey there,

I took my two guinea pigs to the vet on Monday for a fungal infection. The vet took a culture to see if its ringworm (he already thinks it is but just wanted to double check). He gave me hexedene shampoo and oral nizoral. They have been on the medication for a couple days now, I bathed them again yesterday, and disinfected their cage. The only issue is, I cannot tell if they are getting better or not. I guess my question is: how long should I wait to see results in this treatment? One of my pigs has it very bad, he is bald on his rump and his face is all flaky (his eyes are almost forced shut from it). Also, I was wondering, can I used monistat on his face? It is the worst part of his body but it is hard to get while bathing.

Thanks

Katie

Both of mine are just getting over ringworm. Took about a solid 7 days of treatment to get some good looking skin. I am using a nizoral weekly shampoo and monistat topical. I freaked out on day 5 or so because it didn't seem like they were getting any better and I had found a new spot, but it does get better.

I also got rid of everything that I couldn't soak in bleach (including wood). I upped the sanitation to every 3 days, just did a full bleach & bath today on my lunch (3rd bath).

I did do monistat on the face, but you have to be very careful of the mouth and eyes. You have to give it a few min to soak in and then wipe away excess. It's very tricky. I also did not bathe the face area, only the body.

Just keep up the with the meds (dont' miss any doses) and the cleaning and it will clear up. Be sure to wash your hands and change all clothing as well. I kept everything dirty in bags for the first two weeks. Now that its looking better, I'm a little more lax on on changing my clothes every time I touch them.

Good Luck!
