Hello all! The day is fast approaching when I will be departing the New South for the Big Sky of Montana. Only ten days until the moving van pulls out with me, my roommate, two cats, roommie's ball python and of course Toffee.

For those of you who have done long-haul moves, what would you recommend to accommodate Toffee? I will be very limited on space due to the number of mammals. I have a med. dog crate for the two cats, a 10-gal aquarium for the snake, and a medium SuperPet carrier for the cavy; All that AND two bipeds in the cab of a U-haul is going to be pretty cramped.

I was figuring on using hay as bedding and food in the carrier, and turning Toffee out in the bathtub for "floortime" at the hotel. Maybe, if I can get the cats to settle in the crate, I will give him free range in the room, for a short while, but he has yet to be free ranged anywhere, let alone someplace unknown.

I'm WIDE open to suggestions here folks, I've never moved w/a small&furry in tow before. Cats I know, cavies I don't. Looking forward to your advice!!!!!

How long is the drive? I couldn't see being so cooped up in those little Super Pet carriers for long. I use a cat carrier for mine.

The floortime idea in the bathtup is good, just spread around hay and provide water and pellets. Don't forget lots of wet veggies.

slap:

All told, it will be 3 1/2 days (yea, ACK) I have planned out the route and the stops, 12 hrs max per day, breaks every two hours for drivers and cats.

I have used a cat carrier for his trips to the vet, but I wasn't sure if it would be safe for long-haul because of the large holes in the sides. Was worried his feet would get caught, but if you've used it before successfully, that's another $15 I can save for gas (double ACK!)

I would denietilly go with the cat carrier. This is what mine looks like:

So I don't know what you mean about the feet getting caught in the holes.

This is going to be very stressful for the pig, you need to watch her eating and keep the tempature as stable as possible.

hey i see here about travel
have a quick question
going to maine have new piggys bout a week
want to take them with me was thinking i could hold them part of the way and i have a carrier or just leave them behind with a sitter :(
dont know what to do really would like them to go with me do you think it would be ok
any advice would be helpful thanks

I would suggest not stressing them out and putting them in a cat carrier with lots of hay and veggies.

I moved cross country from California to Massachusetts. I moved with a large dog, a cat, a bird, 2 hamsters, and a rabbits, all in a small mini van! They all were awesome! We smuggled them into motels each night (the cat in a towel and used lots of blanks....I am so bad lol) I don’t know about your cats but mine was so funny it was like he had taken a sleeping pill. Oh well rather have a calm cat than a crazy cat in the car. Well I hope the trip goes as planned!

I am also moving to Montana in two weeks, weird! I was going to ask the same questions. I am going to have 3 cats and the piggy with only myself in a Blazer (that will also be full of computers and tv and other electronics) so it is going to be cramped.
I was thinking of leaving Teebo in his cage (if there is room). I don't want to put him in a box, but the cat carrier would take up as much room as the cage would at this point. Teh cats and Teebo get along really well, but I am worried about the stress of having all of them in a small suv together for 3 days. I am sure hes going to get stressed out.
Any other advice? How did your trip go toffeepig?
