Sorry, this was about Henry! I can't tell whether Henry has another URI or not. He was treated for one about a week ago. We treated him with Bactrim. He seemed to clear up and bounce back quite well. Actually, he hasn't lost any weight either. He was 661 grams on August 9th, and today was 676. Same time of day for both weights. So he's gained 15 grams in four days. Does this sound like good weight gain? I will begin weighing daily. I also noticed some nasal discharge and a little sneezing. Niko, his cagemate has been fine through all this though. Could it be that he doesn't have a URI at all, but it is more allergies? I have no idea. I will talk to his vet tomorrow, as she is out of the office today. I just don't understand why he keeps getting it! I clean their cage with dilute bleach water every week (since we've been battling the URI) and had him quarantined during the last round. He is acting normally, bouncing around and popcorning like he normally does. I just don't know what to think right now!

Re: umbilical hernia

If the discharge is clear, and he's not sneezing a lot, and is acting/eating/peeing/pooping normally, it could be allergies. Rather than risk putting him on antibiotics again when he may not need it, I'd just watch him like a hawk for a few days and see how he does.

Without reading back, what is he bedded on?

Fleece currently, but he likes to burrow into his hay. When he does this, he seems to begin sneezing like crazy. I've tried using Orchard grass and he gets the same way.

Re: umbilical hernia

Can you put the hay in a rack so he can't get his nose in it?

Thought I added that sorry! I had their hay in a rack, they would either climb in it, or when I had it as a standing rack they wouldn't touch it. I'm trying to figure out a hay contraptions that they will use. If you have suggestions I will definitely take them! His nose is covered in bits of hay right now. :(

So I'm a little concerned about Henry. He is eating, playing, sleeping, pooping normally. Not acting sick, doesn't look sick. I had not weight him in 16 days (family death so things got nuts). He had been gaining weight quite regularly. He was 676 in August 13th, and yesterday when I weighed him was 754. He hadn't gained quite 100 grams even! Is this ok? He is about six months old I think. Does his weight sound ok for his age?

A 100 gram weight gain in 16 days is perfectly fine considering he was underweight to begin with. 754 grams is a little below average for a 6 month old boar, but considering he seems to be gaining weight he should be up to normal in no time.

At 6 months my boys weighed between 800 grams and 1.3 kilograms, the smaller boys bulked out to over 1 kilogram by their first birthdays but the heavier ones have stayed the same weight.

OK thanks! It's been a struggle with weight gains! I think it's because he's had several URI's. He is healthy now thankfully, and hopefully we can keep it that way! I was just worried about his weight because my 5 month old is about the same weight as he is at 724 grams. Niko was severely malnourished when I got him. I will keep watching their weights! Is there anything I can do to help plump them up?!

I noticed recently that Henry walks funny. I don't know how best to describe it honestly. His back legs seem to be closer together than my other pigs. Is it just the way he walks? Or can pigs get displaced hips? He isn't painful. He runs, popcorns and plays just like any of my other boys. I'm just wondering if it's something I should start keeping an eye on or does it sound normal?
