Too small?

So if I'm making a 2x4 c&c would a 1x1 space be too small for a hay loft? 1x2?

That depends on how many piggys you have. I've seen pictures of them using a 1x1 loft so if you have just one piggy that should work. If you have more then one I don't think they would fit without some fighting.

I'd make a 1x2. If you have, or will eventually have, two pigs, a 1x1 isn't enough. And a 1x2 will give you room to put the veggies up there as well as the hay.

Btw thought I would add that it's not going to be an upper level just a section of the cage cut off by grids...how do I cut the grids to make an opening?

If it's all on one level, you don't have to section it off with grids -- doing so will just make it harder to clean. Just put a litter box and the hay rack at one end.

But if you do want to section it off, you don't have to cut the grids. Just over lap the panels enough to give you an opening.

Sorry to highjack the thread, but you put the veggies in the hay rack? Interesting? I am thinking of getting a hay ball to attach to the inside of teh cage like a hay rack, but we shall see.

You don't put the veggies in the hay rack, but some people have made seperate, smaller racks to put their veggies in instead of using a bowl or plate.

Most don't recommend those hay balls. They can be a safety hazard for your pig. The gallery has a whole section on hayracks with some really awesome ideas.

Oh, really? It was a resuce place here that said they highly recommend them, so that is why I was thinking about them.

Sorry to say, some rescues will occasionally recommend something that's not good for the pigs.

In the case of hay wheels, part of the problem is that they don't hold much hay and are hard to fill. Another is that the wires are too close together, and the pigs can't get to the hay unless the wheel is overfilled and the hay is poking out. The third is that they can get a leg hung if it's between the narrow bars and the pig gets startled.

I'm sorry, I was just wondering why you have to use a hay rack? I recently started just putting the hay directly on my piggy's bedding and he seems much happier with it (because he doesn't have to pull all of it down, and he can run through it).

I was hoping to keep the cage cleaner. Last time I tried to put hay down she pooped and peed EVERYWHERE!

I have two of these from Bed Bath & Beyond and love them:

OH, that is kind of neat!
