So I was holding my male cavy and I started scratching/tickling his back. His head start to move rather crazily, and then he let out this high pitched whistle. What does this mean?

He probally didn't like it I'd say, either that or you hurt him somehow.
Doe's he have any skin complaint's?

Not that I know of...

I thought it looked kinda cute... but then again, anything they do looks cute....

Yeah, I agree, it sounds like he wasn't enjoying it (

Are you sure it wasn't like a tickle and that was his way of laughing?......
........
......

maybe not...

Usually a high-pitched wheek like that indicates pain or fear. When you feed him veggies, you'll notice a different kind of wheek. With him swiveling his head like that, that means he was trying to itch the spot you were tickling. (kind of like a dog thumping his foot when you reached an itchy spot) All in all, it was signs of annoyance and "cut that out".
During lap time, you should hear purring or contented sounding warbles or soft chitters. The first is a sign that he likes the petting and the second is general piggie conversation, also a sign of contentment.

One of my piggies does not care for petting her head. She will throw her head back. This is a show of annoyance.

What exactly does their purring sound like? Also, I've heard them make a sound almost like they're shivering, which is accompanied with a vibration. They seem content when they do this. What does this mean?

That's purring. It usually sounds like it's name-like a cat purring.

Well, then its a high pitched cat purr...

Cute either way.

When you pet around their butt and they vibrate and rumble that is also annoyance. The good kind of purring is different.

I thought I had this figured out, but: Mia made a sound and vibrated the other day. My mom said it reminded her of a raccoon... is that a good or bad sound?

Does it sound like this?

(broken link removed)

If it does, that is the bad sound.

Were you petting near his rump? Many piggies don't like it when you touch thier bottom. I have two who don't mind and one that really hates it.

Yes, exactly like that.

Hey, what do squeak 6,7, and 8 on that link mean?

Check the "Noises" thread on page three or four for the meaning of sounds.

Oh I don't have speakers! Bugger!
