I felt like smacking that kid when I read this.

At least the pig is okay. That is awful though!

Who would risk an animal's life just to be the clown of the campus? He's an idiotic loser.

that's so mean!!!

Not that it makes things ok, but I am glad that he was caught and is having to pay for his crime. I wish he hadn't done it at all. I can't believe all the reports of people abusing guinea pigs! Everywhere you turn there is another new incident. On Guinea Lynx there is a report of a class room pig being drowned in the fish tank, they also suspect the same child of trying to cut the pig's back legs off with scissors.

I feel so bad for the cavy. I hate that guinea pigs are used for tests to test medicine.

I remember that story from gl when it happened. And I read the thread about a 5th grader who was suspended from school and did what Amanda said in her post.

We need a huge hammer to smack all these moronic people with who abuse animals!

Ly&Pigs-- Not just any old hammer, but a big whopping sledge hammer. I guess it makes their pathetic lives seem better because animals are the one thing they're bigger and stronger than. What idiots.

We read that article-and grew sick to our stomachs. Just another reason why we need to teach our children early on about respecting animal life. You have to wonder if these kids aren't displaying some other abusive tendencies.

DeeDee is a teacher of many years-and she will tell you that it is not appropriate to have small animals in the classroom unless there is constant supervision and a lot of education about properly handling the animals. One story she heard of was where a guinea pig was literally hugged to death by a preschooler. The child had no way of understanding how much damage could be done to such a small creature, and accidentally crushed the poor animal. Therefore, it is the responsibilty of the teacher to maintain vigliance in supervising thier classroom pets.

This is not to say that there shouldn't be animals in classrooms-quite the opposite, in fact. Animals can enrich a childs learning experience, and it can also be the beginning of learning to correctly handle the animals. There just needs to be proper responsibilty in keeping them-just like in the home.

I've read the article before and reading it the second still makes me sick. What fun can you get out of purposly putting an animals life at danger? None whatsoever!

I agree with EricNDeedee. My sister is a special education teacher, and though she doesn't bring animals to school with her, her friend does. She has four guinea pigs and two newfoundlands, and she'll bring them into school for the day, show the kids, and then take them home afterwards. The kids really do learn quite a bit about animal life and how to treat them.

Oh yes, that was on the local news awhile back. Times like this I'm not proud to be an IU alumni.
