I'm trying to figure out what would be the best way to hold up a 3x3 off the ground. How many grids would you need underneath it or what other things could you use (besides a table) to hold it up?

You would need 21 grids, I believe exactly. Depending on your design. That is for a design that has three rows of vertical grids, and grids horizontal underneath the cage for support.

Here are some thing you can use to make stands:

-plastic folding tables: here are some from walmart, ranging between $50-$60 usually look pretty nice and are sturdy. http://www.walmart.com/cp/Folding-Tables-Chairs/1026080

- about 4-5 storage tubs: they are the big plastic ones, but make sure it's nothing you will ever want to store something in! :) not quite as fancy, but it in no way will look BAD in your home. A more cheap option, as you can get them all for $25ish-$30ish

-regular tables: often pretty expensive, but if you find you have too many side tables, or another old coffee table in storage, put it t use! Looks pretty classy.

- 3-5 bookshelves: because you have a 3x3, you will need 3-5 bookshelves compared to others who may have a 2x4 or 2x3. If you only want 3 bookshelves, you will need 3 fairly long bookshelves (probably about 24 inches long) and have them lined up in rows. Or, for a prettier effect, get 5 bookshelves at least about 16in long. Do two in the front, shelves facing out, two in the back, and one in the middle. I doesn't need to be in rows. This looks pretty nice and creative. But, 5 shelves can get a little pricey.

- build one! Just get a few pieces of wood cut at lowes, possibly paint it, sand it, or gloss it, and nail it up! You can even leave it plain and it will look nice too! Honestly, it might even be easier to put together than shelves. And it's a fairly good price too. About 5 legs ( so that one can be in the middle ), 5 platform pieces 36' each to lay horizontally, and four 36' pieces to connect all four legs together on the side! It's really great because it can have customizable height and can size perfectly to your cage!

i hope this helps, and enjoy getting some sort of stands!

I am going to use a plastic table and some plywood around it to make it fit. I can't really explain it >_<. You can probably find big enough tables though, but this is just one we had.

No prob! I actually have a cage on grid stands with a 2x6! I used 20 grids. You can see my picture, and probably how I did the 4 rows of two is self explanatory. And then 3 sets of 4 grids are used for support directly underneath the cage. Make sure if you have connectors, you use cable ties too! It make the WORLD of difference in stability. It wil nearly topple over without them! Make sure you also practically cable tie everything together. It will make your stand pretty strong :) and in fact, storing things underneath the stands can make it more stable, preventing it from swag side to side. Hope ths helps! :D

Ps: if ou really wan he bookshelves, you could do yours with 3 bookshelves all aligned. The don't have to touch either. To make it even look more fancy, you could put two stair case bookshelves on the ends and one normal one in the middle. (you would need more support in the middle becouse yours is longer) :)
