I bought alfalfa (grass? hay?) today from a local farmer, all baled up into square bales, etc. anyway, smelled fresh, etc. BUT it's all stemmy. it's 2, 3, or 4th cute grass (she said) and it's still all stemmy. I've looked at hay racks in the photo galleries, and my hay doens't look like that. is it because it's alfalfa? (growing piggie)

I dont get it. I thought I was getting a steal at $3.00/ bale, I bought 2. they seem to like it, but it's not as happy and grassy looking as some of them I've seen on here..

hellllllp :(

now I read that alfalfa is NOT supposed to be fed in aulk, or every day.. GRRR, I've spend a lot more on these pigs than I thought I would.. Not that I mind, but my husband is getting a little peeved. He just figures hay is hay, and "they can't sell guinea pig food that isn't healthy for a guinea pig." I am getting so unnerved. I spend 6.oo today (which is nothing compared to what I've already spent) and I am getting low on funds, only to find out now, I have to buy more hay!!!

aaaaah!

you said your piggie is still growing (under 6 months?). if so, then alfalfa is okay. but it probably looks different then the ones on here because the majority of the hay you see is timothy. alfalfa is a very stemmy hay.

how big is the bale?

That hay is perfectly fine. They recommend timothy hay over alfalfa hay because it has less protien and more bulk, (which is what you got by getting 3rd or 4th cut). Don't worry about it.

The reasons it's stemmy looking is because

1. It's Alfalfa Hay, not a grass.
2. It's a bale. Bales look "stemmier" than minibales, oxbow or Kleenmama's because theirs aren't full bales.
3. It's is most likely 1st cutting. Which is rougher than 2nd.

Your not spending alot on your cavy at all. $6.00 for hay is great! Would your husband rather you spend $3-$8 on a "minibale" of Kaytee or Haycob that won't even last 2 weeks? Cavies are expensive critters. He better get used to it lol.

someoen asked how big the bale was.. I'm not sure, pretty big.. big enough to fill my trunk! about 1/3 or 1/4 of it fills a rubbermaid box.

??

$6 for 2 bales of alfalfa hay is a very good deal and not expensive at all.

My dad, when he still farmed, sold square bales (like the ones you bought) of plain orchard grass for $4 a bale -- 5 years ago!

Wish I could find a few bales of timothy hay for the price you got!
