Terrible Nails~need help!

My cousin just got a guinea pig that was abandoned. She will take it to the vet probably next week. The thing that she asked me about was its nails. The poor things nails are totally curled to the side and one of them is curled under. I am afraid to cut its nails because I know they will bleed bad. What should I do? Can a vet take care of this? My cousin is asking me if I will take care of the nail situation and I am afraid I dont know what to do. Please Help!

If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, a vet should be able to do it easily.

If they're that bad you should definitely have the vet do it. They don't charge much for a nail trim. I do my own pigs nails on a regular basis and it's pretty easy but you have a special situation.

I got a guinea pig who gave him to us. His nails were as bad as your friends. We trimmed them, VERY little by little, until the blood line was down more, and now I trim them about once a month. You should get a vet to do it, though. Can you see the blood line? If his nails are dark *some guinea pigs nails are* the vet might put a light under his nails to be able to see the blood line, if that works. If you are really scared to do it, take it to a vet, otherwise just trim off the points of his nails, and make sure you have some medicine around to stop the bleeding if you cut too far down. Try to clip them to where it's just the point of the nails unless you can see the blood line.
