Dominance Stressed after introductions.

Officially separating my boys

I introduced my boys Weasley and Luke to each other about a week and a half ago. Things have been fine until today. I left for a final around 9 and got home at 11:30. I instantly noticed that Luke's eye was bleeding and rushed him to the vet.

They said he was the luckiest little guinea pig. His eyelid is torn, but his is eye is alright. He needs a stitch, but should be fine to come home later today. He is currently at the vet in their hands.

I'm so angry and frustated and sad at myself. I love him so much and can't imagine loosing him. I'm so mad I wasn't here to stop them and separate them before this happened.

I'm going to order Luke his own big C/C cage and put them close enough to see but not close enough to touch each other. I'm fine with them being solo pigs, but i'm so upset that this happened. I just feel so responsible and I'm praying that he will come home fine. :weepy:

Re: Officially separating my boys

It's not your fault, I know it feels that way, it's hard. But at least you got him to the vet, and he's going to be okay, buying a new C&C for him is a good idea, setting it close sounds good too. Hope he's okay, and gets all better soon!

Re: Officially separating my boys

Luke is home and doing well! I am very impressed with the quality of vet care he received. They said he was a perfect little guinea pig and did great during his time at the vet.

They said his eyelid should heal just fine. The stitch doesn't look that great, but I suppose I've never seen a good looking stitch. haha. I just need to go back in ten days to get the stitch out. He is eating and drinking and enjoying extra cuddles in the mean time. I'm so happy and thankful he is alright!

Re: Officially separating my boys

Kit thats the exact thing that happened to my piggy. I did an intro. They "tollerated" eachother for a few days and then BAM! All out brawl of fur and blood. I have never seen so much blood from such a tiny piggy. He bit through the other piggies eyelid too but he didn't need a stitch. He did heal fine just keep an eye out for absesses. Keep it nice and clean and dry.

Sorry for your experience. 2 years later and that is still the most tramatized I have been.BUT good to know that in a sheer emergency I won't pass out from seeing blood. Hehe. Trying to bandage my own or my kids injuries or getting blood drawn and out I go, unfortionately. lol

Re: Officially separating my boys

Awww I'm glad he's alright too! Poor lil guy, but he'll love some extra cuddles with you I bet!

Re: Officially separating my boys

Oh my, what a horrible scare ! Oh my...I am so glad that he is o.k. though, whew! Sending him lots of love and prayers for a speedy recovery !

Re: Officially separating my boys

I am glad more damage was not done! I had to separate my 3 as well. Did intros twice (even buddy bath), but my Charlie, as sweet as he he is with me, is a terror living with George and Patch. So, I had to put grids between them.
Surprising, the two that fought to blood shed when they lived together now spend almost all their time socialize at "the trough".
I fixed it so that they share a hay rack and their water bottles are near each other. They also get at least an hour of floor time daily together and usually around 4 -5 on Saturday and a couple of hours on Sunday. They play the dominance game but never any bloodshed.
Good luck with setting up the new cage. And hope Luke mends well.

Re: Officially separating my boys

I'm so sorry Luke was hurt. Thank you for keeping us updated on his vet visit. I just put all 4 of my boys together and dread the thought of finding one of the injured. I'm glad your able to get another cage to allow them to see, but not touch. Sending Luke healing thoughts and piggy kisses!

Re: Officially separating my boys

Just be careful with placing the cages close together with solo cavies, pigs has a tendency to obsess about getting to the other pig & could break their teeth chewing the bars.

Re: Officially separating my boys

I had a male pig I couldnt pair with any other pig. I tried several even babies. It always ended in the one pig getting hurt. I built skunk his own cage right next to the others. He lived out his life very happy that way. He could smell them, even rubbed bumms sometime. All were happy with the arrangement.
