Well I woke up this morning to one empty cage. Stanley has somehow got out, I think he must have climbed over the top so I'll have to make alid for his cage now grr. My problem is though I cant catch him! He's under the tv cabinet (we've cable tied all the wires up so he cant eat any) but I cant reach him at all. Ive opened his cage and moved it to where he can see it, I;'ve rustles the hay bag and put fresh hay in, more food, cucumber and pepper but nope, nothing. He's just sitting there watching me. I've left him alone to make his own way out for two hours now!! nothing.

Any suggestions?? Theres no way I can reach him as the cabinet is too heavy for me to move. He might have been there all night with no food or water!!!

Can he see and smell the veggies? Is he stuck or can he get out the same way he got in? If he is stuck you may have to get help in moving the cabinet. Silly ole pig, keep us posted.

Hes not stuck, as soon as I left theroomhemade hismove to under the sofa. We've only had him a week so he's not used to us. He's also not too fond of his veg yet either sothats not tempting him at all.

At the moment Ive got his cage so the entrance is against the sofa so he can run in without even seeing me. still not back though

He'll get hungry and come out eventually. Keep the veggies at bay.

When my rats got out I bought a "Havahart" animal trap and caught them. It doesn't injure them, and my rats are scared of people so it was the only thing that works for me. You probably won't need to go out and buy one, though, you can always use an old-fashioned stick and a box! I'm sure he'll come out for some food eventually. Piggies can't resist food for very long.

Is there a hidey house that he runs to in the cage? Could you try putting a hidey house in the very back corner of the cage with veggies in it to see if he'll stay there? Could you set up an opening so it falls closed when he runs through it somehow?

He's finally in! I ended up hiding on the sofa so he couldnt see me and using a knitting needle to quickly close the door. Hes in such a mood though he squeeking like crazy cos I've made a lid for his cage.
Hes actually climbing up and hanging off it though..he's crazy

Maybe you could place a piece of sturdy cardboard on the floor next to the couch, put his favorite hidey house on top of it, and then when he goes in, close off his entrance lift it up, and put him away?

Poor Pablos had to sacrfice his second level to make a lid for Stanleys cage, at least until they can go in together in two weeks.
Pablo never did anything like that, I didnt think guinea pigs culd climb vertically...

I'd love to see that. I bet it is hilarious. If he is still doing it can you get some video?

Glad you were able to finally corral him without serious harm. I know I panicked a while back when one of the nephews decided to get one of my piggies out and then just put him down and left the room.

That doesn't sound safe, I'd be worried he might hurt himself. You should try adding an extra 6" of coroplast or cardboard around the inside of the cage so he can't climb, and keep anything he might be able to get on top of away from the walls.

I agree, that would really worry me. I was going to suggest the same thing. I'm sorry if you've already said, but how old is Stanley? I'm sure he's pretty small to be able to do this.

It's rare for a pig to climb like that but it does happen. I used to have a baby boar Patchy who could climb the corner of his cage and escape. He wanted to go visit his mommy but he couldn't climb into the girls cage so he'd sit outside the girls cage and cry for his mommy. I had to take down his loft because he'd take flying leaps off it to get out the cage. I ended up putting a lid on the cage and all was well, he could no longer get out.

Well we've raised the sides and put a lid on now, I've also put his cozies under where he climbs the most, in case he does fall. Apart from making the whole side covered if you know what I mean, I dont see what else we can do. Hopefully he'll calm down a bit when hes introduced to Pablo in two weeks.

Its not like he was climbing up the corners, it was vertical straight up one of the grids.Ive done all I can think of now, we'll see .

He's nine weeks old so he is quite young..will he stop doing it when he gets bigger? cos its terrifying

Baby pigs are crazy buggers. They do all kinds of strange things. He will probably calm down in several months.

This thread was quite riveting! So glad you were able to catch him. I've had one high speed chase in my living room with a pig so I somewhat know the frustration. You wouldn't think a big fat mushy thing with one inch legs could surpass us so well in speed and stamina!

Younger pigs are definitely more apt to jump and climb, so that should taper off as he gets older. My older piggies can hardly be bothered to trek the ramp to the second level, let alone try to climb anything vertical!

Now that there's a happy ending, this is too funny. You've got a real adventure pig there. If he can hear Pablo, maybe he's looking for that other pig he hears?

My Lamby used to climb straight up the grid & over the top. We saw her do it once and were amazed. I had moved her into a cage where she obviously did not want to be, so I just let her live in the cage she kept climbing into. Piggies are so happy when they get their own way!

Well we got up this morning and looked in Stanleys cage and he wasnt there!! I was running round panicking until my boyfriend walked in and found him under the fleece in his cage so now we've had to go out and buy new fleece which is big enough to clip over the edges so he cant get under it.

He can probably hear Pablo so yeah, maybe he is trying to get there? They are in the same room (I know they should be in seperate rooms aswell as cages but we tried and theres no where else for him to go, our flat is...compact. Only two weeks to go until they can meet though.
