lately my guinea pig has been squeaking everytime i pick her up. is this just because she might have a tummy ache or is it worse. (believe im picking her up the right way)

awww....i wish i knew, sorry. i hope she isnt sick though and if she is hope she gets better.

what kind of squeak?

It happens if they're scared. The pig's probably just not used to you that's all. Make sure you're not squeezing their tummies at all, that can cause some damage to their organs. =)

I think that your pig is just scared. Bribe he with some food then have a go at picking her up

Whenever I try to pick my piggies up from there cage they run around like chickens with there heads cut off. They get so stressed out and so do I. When I finally catch them sometimes they squeak. I've decided to stop chasing them around because they were getting frightened of me. I give them some veggies by hand so they get use to me and see me as a good thing (food person!!!!). Also, when I do need to take them out I do it really calmly and with slow movements. This seems to work a lot better.

My theory is (I'm no expert though!) they squeak when you pick them up because they're frightened. Try to be really calm around them. Sometimes I'll just lay down beside they're cage and talk to them gently. Then they get more use to me and won't feel as scared. When you do pick the piggers up though be sure not to squeeze hard. I know sometimes you want to because they're wiggling and you don't want to drop them, but just use your other hand for support, especially on there bum so they feel more safe.

From my limited experiance so far it's all about getting your pigs to trust you and feel safe. Give them lots of TLC!

Good luck! (I hope I was of "some" help!)

all you owners with expierience, how long does it take for the piggy to get used to you and the idea of being picked up?

I have had my pigs for about 8 months, and they still run away if i come near the cage. Once i pick them up they do the happy squeek and are very happy, but I think they may just see running away from me like a game. Kind of like little kids think its hilarious when they run away from there parents.

oh, i see.

I also once read somewhere that guinea pigs have this automatic instinct to run when they see something bigger than them coming over. This instinct is from the wild, to get away from hungry prey who are looming over them. Remember, in the wild nothing picks guinea pigs up to cuddle so it's not really natural for them...even if in the end they are in heaven from your petting!

It takes a different amount of time for each pig. One of mine is fine now, but the other still runs and hides. I think it's just their personalities.
