Spot Cleaning my girls?

I have two long haired pigs and their butt area gets a little messy from urine. Like, kind of matted. I have a couple of brushes and I try to gently comb these areas daily, but I wonder if I can just take a nice warm, wet wash cloth and spot clean those areas?

Any ideas on this? Might some kind of a wide tooth comb be better for this?

Thanks!

M

I think a comb would be a good idea but if its really tangled you could use a bit of warm water im guessing(never had long haired pigs). My guinea pigs "tail" gets a lil matted i just give him a good brushing though.

Thanks! How does he do with the brushing? Mine don't like it and squeek a lot!

That usually means you're pulling their fur. Mine do that too. When they squeal they're saying OWCH!

I trim my pigs fur around their rear so it doesn't drag in their litter and get all tangled. If you must clean them, use a wet wipe. Those work great.

Please do not bathe your pig unless necessary. And if you do, use a pig or baby animal shampoo in 1-2 inches of lukewarm water. Do not wash the face, nor get water in their eyes/ears/nose. Do not submerge them under water. Rinse through, and make sure they are completely dry before you put them back. Use a blow dryer on LOW. Make sure your hand is underneath at all time to make sure the pig is not getting too hot.

Alos, have the cage cleaned before putting your clean pig back. That way she'll stay cleaner longer.

Okay, like baby wipes? Great idea!!

Thank you!

i'm not sure but there could be something bad in there because they tend to have that cleanser smell, i would stick with a damp cloth

Hmmm..I'd guess if I'd use them on my tender baby's butt, I could use them on pig fur. No? I use unscented for babies.

babies dont grrom themselves and thats the diffrence i think Its not the actually puting on the skin that;s bad, its the ingestion of it.

I have a long hair piggy too, I just trim her hir short down there. Not up the back put around the tummy and leg area, and so far she's don't have any problems after that.

I trim all five of my pigs hair in the back when it starts getting wet. It doesent matter to me how long their hair is, as long as its dry and comfortable.

I think you should just trim their hair. My long-haired pig's hair used to mat, so I just started trimming it. That works a lot better than washing and brushing it.

I just trim around their read and near their belly so it doen't drag around and get all messy and tangled. That way they stay comfortable and clean. I trim Jazz's mohawk too, but because it get's in his eyes. :p I wouldn't trim all of his fur. I just cut out knots so I don't pull his hair trying to comb it, and trim the edges around the bottom so they don't get full of urine and litter.
