I was wondering what teeth chattering sounds like on a guinea pig, and puring.

Here's a great site for listening to the sounds guinea pigs make...

https://www.mgpr.org/MGPR/Guinea Pig Sounds.htm

I've heard mine do the chattering and it is very obvious, it's not the deep "rolling" sound, but it sounds like two teeth tapping together like a kid in the frigid cold weather.

WOW, now I know that my guinea pigs are not chattering thier teeth.

THANKS!!!!!

I played the sounds for Porkchop and she was so curious I think she is lonely. I might need to find her a friend.

OH MY GOD! thanks sugarBear for that great site, being a newish g/p owner. I just had a look, since my piggie was, what I thought, making a 'strange' noise...
but its just that she was "happy" according to that site!!! What a relief ;)

I know I felt so reasured when I found out that the sounds that my piggies were making ment they were HAPPY!!!!!! Porkchopsmom, you should really think about getting another piggie for Porkchop!!!

Thanks!!!

Porkchopsmom, I am sure your little cuttie would love a friend! My g-pigs groom eachother and snuggle. I am sure they would be lonley by themselfs. They are a lot of fun. Having two is cool in its own way. You get to see cute behaviors you might miss with just one! :0)

You're very welcome butterflymiss! I saved that site in my favorites so I can listen again if I forget what the sounds mean.

Porkchopsmom - I have just one GP and have her caged in a neat idea cubes cage above my bunny. She was always very quiet and a little skittish even though my son holds her and cuddles with her 2-3 times a day. When I introduced her to my bunny she totally changed her personality! She was hopping (popcorning) and running around making all kinds of happy sounds, then when I put her back in her cage where she has no contact with the bunny she would squeal the lonely squeal and it broke my heart! My sister gave me her GP since she wasn't able to give her enough attention, and I have to warn you - introducing a new pig can be very stressful, but if you read about introducing new pigs on this site it will give you a lot of great advice. Here's what I learned (by my own mistakes) 1) Never put either pig in the other's cage - it's just asking for a fight! 2) They will "fight" to win dominance, and this fight should be expected, but if there is bloodshed, or if the fight gets out of control you should separate them. 3) Don't make the mistake of putting opposite sexes together, it can make for a pregnant piggy and it could put her life in jeopardy (not to mention there are enough piggy's out there who need a loving home without us adding to the numbers. 4) Don't put them side by side in separate cages to "introduce" them. This can make them more aggressive toward each other.

I hope this helps!

Oh, by the way - I only give the GP and Bunny strictly supervised play time together (when I'm in the pen with them).

I have some comments about the above quotes.
1) When introducing pigs you should not put them into each others cages because the cage will have the smell belonging to the pig that lives there. It does not always result in a fight (I know from personal experience), but it's not a good idea to do this. The way to introduce is to put them out for floortime in a neutral territory such as on a couch, on the kitchen floor, etc. Clean the cage you are going to house the pigs in thoroughly washing everything and change bedding before putting in the pigs you just introduced.

2) They don't "fight" to establish dominance. What happens is the pig who wants to be dominance will rumblestrutt, butt sniff, butt nudge, chase, butt dragging (to leave their scent), mount, have nose face-offs, chatter their teeth a little at the other pig, and maybe raise hackles. This is not fighting, this is showing dominance. If both pigs want to be dominant and one will not back down, then the "fighting" may occur. I have successfully introduced several sows together and 3 boars together and have yet to see a fight at all. Nipping, hair in the mouth, yawning, and sustained teeth chattering are all normal behaviors as well and they should not be separated if they are doing these things either. If they do start fighting because one pig will not back down and be submissive to the other and there is quite a bit of bloodshed or the pigs look like they are caught in a tornado, separate immediately.

4) If they are out of quarantine, it's perfectly fine to house them in cages next to each other for a few days before introductions. This helps them get used to each others smells and they can see each other. It doesn't make them more aggressive towards each other.

Please read https://cavyspirit.com/sociallife.htm for more information on introductions.

Ly&Pigs - thanks for clarifying those points, your information is very helpful. I was speaking from my personal experience, and obviously I do not have much GP experience.

When my pigs were introduced I really thought it was more like a fight than just establishing dominance. They were fine in mutual territory for a little while, but they wouldn't get close to each other. It was a pretty large area, so maybe if I try to introduce them in a new, smaller area it would work better.

I read a post that said it's not a good idea to put the cages side by side because I read on another post that you shouldn't do that and although I don't remember exactly what that post said I know it had something to do with dominance and was viewed as a not-so-good idea for introducing a pair.

I hope I didn't confuse anyone with my post and lack of experience!

It may have had to do with putting a cage of sows next to a cage of boars. Sometimes, boars will fight if they are housed next to sows because they can smell when the sows come into heat. I have my boars cage attached to the side of my sows cage and so far no fighting at all. My boys have been together now for over 6 weeks. Bubba is well over a year old and Patch is just over 9 weeks old.

Thank you very much for this link. Now I know that they are happy when they are sitting on my lap. Also, I was able to ascertain the new sound they began to make. They're either curious or telling each other to keep away. They've just began to make these sounds and I wasn't sure if they were going to "go at it" but, I think the sound they're making is more of a courious one.

Hey Sugarbear, i went to that website you said but it doesnt play the sounds, got any other websites?

check your speakers

Theres a square with little dots on the top right corner. is this because of the speakers or is it the computer?

You may not have the right program installed on your computer to hear the audio, but if not you should be prompted to download a player. You can try free audio players like musicjukebox or realplayer. There are plenty of free players available to download.

Here are some other sites: (broken link removed)

(broken link removed) (you'll have to scroll down on this site to find the sounds)

Good luck, it really does help us to understand our pigs.

Sounds like you just need to click on the "little round" PLAY button, try clicking on the button with the triangle that points to the right side of the screen. This is the play button.

There is no little round button that says "PLAY"

Hey Sugarbear, thanks for the extra websites, the seconod one helped me! thanks ;)

it is a triangle
