As a new Cavy owner, i have, of course, been doing tons of research.

(sounds) But I am still lost as to the nosies my GP is making. When I pet her, she will do this quite squeek or "wheek", then every now and then she will shudder and make almost like a purrrr, or a click click click. Then she will make sort of grinding sounds with her teath. i let her smell my hands and she gives me little nose kisses and tickle nibbles (it doesnt hurt). are all these normal? Oh and also when i pet her nose and keep going down her back she pushes her nose up ans to make me to faster or to stop me. i'm not sure what that is either. does that mean she doesnt like it.

(Boo Boos) I adopted my Cavy from petco (she was a surrender from a woman who had trouble with her but every one in the store loved her and i soon came to follow with the love after i held her) the manager from the store says that this was the second time the woman had brought her back. the gp was having a skin problem. on the top of her head she has a little bald spot that the store manager said was from stress. but recently i found a little scab like thing on the side of her face. could this have been from stress too? she doesnt appear to have any "crawly critter" problems (after i saw that i did a through body check) any ideas? (and the bald spot has a little scab too more like dries skin that has gotten much better since 3 days ago)

(peek-a-boo) my little cavy seems to be a bit too timid. i recently had a post "cover or no cover". I put a shoe box in her cage with a large hole in it for a hidey box. well when ever i go near the cage or turn a light on she runs for cover. Whats up with that? I put a blanket over the top of the cage so she would feel more sheltered. She is still getting used to her surroundings but it doesnt seem normal to me. But then agian this is my first cavy.

(name) I had picked a name for her. she came with the name pickles. I didnt like that. And I dont think she did either. So i decided on Cordella. Well I ended up not likeing that either. could you all let me know what you think of these: Ashby, Cordella, Thady, Belle, Piper, or any other segguestions would be nice. she is light brown (tan) and balckish brown, almost like a brindle. she is almost a Abyssinian however hse only has 4 rossettes. so i think she may be an american abyssinian mix. as you know she is very timid and very cuddley. Thanks for your help!

When your piggy pushes her head up while you are petting her there that means STOP petting her there. My piggy does that sometimes when she has had enough of me petting her down her nose. While petting her if your piggy is making like a chirping or sounding like talking jibberish that means shes happy. It's when they make a motor like sound which mean stop what you are doing, they are not to happy with that. Licking and nibbling is normal so don't worry about that. Sometimes when you piggy may get antsy or start getting fidgety, it may mean they have to urinate.

A hidey house is fine for your piggy but I wouldn't put a cover over your cage. You are just going to make it harder for your piggy to get used to normal everyday sounds and movements. Go about your business, continue walking past the cage and doing everything else you would normally do. Will take a couple of weeks if not more for your piggy to settle down and not startle everytime you move.

A vet checkup should always be standard when getting a new piggy. It will also give your peace of mind.

thank you for the advice!

does any one else have any experience with these sounds?

I'm just going to address the scabs or boo-boos as you call them. My advice is to have her checked by a gp vet. Not all "crawly critters" can be seen with the naked eye. Mange mites are microscopic and can cause the symptoms you descibed. It is better to be safe than sorry.

thank you! i will make an appointment

tuesday at 1030! thanks!

The name Belle means beautiful so I think you should go with that. Oh, did I mention it's my daughter's middle name? I guess I am biased. Good luck with her.
