Just got two Guiena Pigs about three weeks ago. I have been checking in their fur pierodicly for bugs, and today I found some! But not exactly sure what they are. I know they are not fleas. They are like white, or beige. Could they be lice? Can you recomend something for them? We don't have any really good pet stores around here, so I can't get any guinea pig shampoo. But I have herd that you can use shampoo for kittens. Any sugestions would be great and asap. Cause if it is lice I want to get rid of it before they get on me and my children.

Thanks, Mrs. Eads

It might be mites you should take him to go see a vet for antibiotics or medicine.

From what I've heard, mites are microscopic. You should though, take your pet to a vet so they can properly diagnose what it is.

if u r unsure what is it & feel worry abt it, take it to vet. if no small pet shampoo u can use baby shampoo as it is soft.

Have a look at this page https://www.guinealynx.info/hairloss.html#externalparasites and post of the forums there if you have any more questions. It sounds like lice to me - but that's just a guess and you need to make sure you find out and treat the pigger accordingly. A trip to the vet to make sure the problem is accurately identified and treated is the best plan of action.

What is your opion?

I called the local vet here, and he sugeted that I get a flea tick and lice shampoo from the store, and use it on them. But what I am worried about is, I am not so sure that he is all that experianced in the treatment of guiena pigs. Should I take his sugetion, or should I get a hold of a vet out of town. ( I live in a very small town)

This Happened to Me!

This happened to Be and We to Her To the Vetenarian... They where very small and were a Whitish Color and they looked like danjrif...
Guess what your GP has Lice all you have to do is go to the vet and they will give you a formula and thats it !!!

Find out the name of the shampoo, what it's active ingredients are (incase it's not a well known one) and the potency. And then post your query over at Guinea Lynx (broken link removed) with the information you've posted here. That forum is much better equipped to deal with medical problems. Good luck!

There is a chemical free way to rid the pig of lice. The shampoos are harsh, and they really don't work.

There is a device called a lice free comb. It's made for humans, but would be fine also for your pig. It takes batteries. What it does is electricute the lice. You just comb through every day for about 15 days and your problem is solved. And it's re-usable so if the pig gets re-infested, you already have the solution.

You should also use it on yourself and any children in the house, as it is very contagious. Follow all the same precautions as if it were a human with the bugs.

The comb is about $25 dollars, and worth every penny!! I run a day care, so lice is a problem from time to time. I will never use shampoos again!!!

If you need help locating one, let me know and I will find a website for you. I know Wal-Mart carries these combs.

Good Luck
Marie
