So, I was checking my facebook page on Thursday evening, and on there I am a member of a local group of people in my are selling stuff. Basically it's an online yard sale and people sell anything and everything. Anyways, a girl on there posted "Is anyone missing a Guinea pig" with a picture of the little guy looking disheveled and out of sorts. She said that her and her son were walking to the little creek that runs through their backyard when they spotted the poor thing in the creek. She picked him up, and having never owned a Guinea pig before she didn't quite know what to do for him, but she knew he didn't belong out there in the wilds of her backyard. Being that it was late in the evening the local animal control and humane society was closed, but she called animal control and they told her they would be by Friday to pick him up and take him to the humane society. She said it looked like he may have suffered from heat stroke and he had a huge bald spot on his lower back.

Many people commented on there saying they wanted him and not to give him to animal control, but she said no that she wanted to make sure he got checked out properly by a vet and that if they were still interested in wanting him they could contact the humane society and adopt hi from there after he was given the care and treatment he needed. I contacted her and told her that I wished I had checked my Facebook page earlier and seen her post, because I surely would have come to get him and take him to my vet that I regualrly take my Giunea pigs to, as they are open until like 8 pm, and I would have paid for his treatment no matter what it cost. I told her that if animal control didn't get there at a resonable time that she could still contact me and I would come to get him and take him straight away to my vet. She said that she appreciated my offer and would keep that in mind just in case.

On Friday she said she woke up that morning and he didn't look so good and that animal control came to get him early and took him straight to the humane society where their vet determined that he had suffered from heat stroke and that he was really really old and that apparently it seemed as though whoever he belonged to just didn't want to take care of him anymore and address the problems that come along with old age for a Guinea pig, so instead of surrendering him to a shelter they decided the best thing to do was to let him go and fend for himself. Unfortunately he was so far gone that he had to be euthanized.

This really makes me angry and upset! When you have an animal you have them for life, and you are supposed to take care of them no matter what. If you can no longer take care of them to the best of your ability, then you do the right thing and find someone who will. You don't just dump them off somewhere or let them go out in the wild helpless and scared and old on top of that! Having an animal like having a kid is a huge commitment, and if you can't commit yourself 100%, then you're not fit to have either!!!

That is crazy. My fiance and i had a genuine conversation when we got our pigs that we go hungry before they do since they depend completely on us.
Old age is a part of committing to a pet no matter how hard it is.

What I don't understand is, if you decide you don't want an animal any longer, what is stopping you from bringing it to a shelter?? I mean, if you even consider abandoning a poor animal then clearly you're far from a decent person, but how hard is it to at the very least bring it somewhere where it will get proper care? There are plenty of local shelters, rescues, and even vet offices all around the US. It's not like dropping them off somewhere is hard.

And the funny thing is, a lot of the people I see abandoning/neglecting these animals have plenty of money to care for them (or make the drive) yet they simply refuse to do so. I just.. don't get it. What sick, twisted mind must these people have to think it is acceptable to abandon a living creature in such a way? I realize that most people don't think very highly of animals - the small ones in particular - but still. I just.. ugh. I really hate people sometimes.

In Oregon last year a girl abandoned several guinea pigs that she wanted to breed in a ditch, they were all teddies and people found the poor things and took them to vets office, this vets office did not house guinea pigs but they took them on and he girl was arrested and charged. The recently this year, they started the very first guinea pig rescue "to my knowledge in Oregon in honor of these poor piggies. here is the story. I was so upset and angry oh i was so mad. I am happy that local people found them when they did, people can be cruel.

This happens so often with so many creatures. Oops they are old we don't want to deal with this anymore. It's awful and sad. The rescue my daughter and I volunteer with takes in the sick and unwanted and my daughter nor I can ever wrap our brains around why people are so evil.

This makes me sad. I love old animals. My first piggie lived until 7 and I didn't forget about her (I tried to sneak her down to dinner once). My oldest dog is 8 (but shes a bc so really like 2) and I take her out twice a day to play, and I care for her as if she was a puppy. In my opinion, old animals (especially from shelters) have more love because they've been through a lot in their lives and are grateful for what they have (not saying all animals aren't) and they are wiser then young pups. I hate people getting puppies cause they are cute, but as son as they are not a puppy they're 'ugly' 'old', 'No more love', etc, etc we've heard it all before! In my opinion, old pets are the best and I wouldn't throw a pet out by cause they are old.

Here's a true story: I had a senior dog (we got home from a shelter when he was 8), and I loved him until he was 14 (when he passed). In his last days, I didn't make my dad hand feed him or leave him to suffer standing (he had arthritis). I would put him on his bed or on my lap while I fed him a handful of food. And I was a young kid, and I did that all by myself because I knew I owed to to him (my dad helped a bit like if he choked or wouldn't take water). I loved him until the very last day, and my gift for all that was having an amazing best friend, and knowing he loved me so much he waited for me to pick him up and hold him one last time before he passed.

Sorry for the rant, but this happens all too often. It's getting old. People need to grow up and realize animals are people too.
