As the title says I have pneumonia (was diagnosed today). I am the main provider for our 2 pigs. Is it OK for me to continue to feed them etc...? I have been for the last couple of days thinking I just had a bad cold/cough. :guilty:

Thanks!

Most viruses and infections are not transmittable between humans and pets. You should be fine being around them. Feel better!

I thought pneumonia was one of the few things that *could* pass to pigs?

Remember to cough into the bend of your elbow, wash your hands(don't just use hand sanitizer). Getting into the habit of coughing into the bend of your elbow is good anyways. I hate when people cough in their hands, tissue, or nothing at all. It makes me want to hose them down with rubbing alcohol.

Hopefully you'll still be able to care the pigs, period. Get well soon!

Thanks :). I did not think it was unsafe but was not sure and the more I thought about it the more I wanted to just make 100%. Do not need them sick on top of me being sick. Doc already threatened me with a 3+ day hospital stay if I do not take it easy over the next week, and if the piggies got sick I am sure I would NOT get any rest, I would sit with them 24/7 so... yeah, would not be good all around! Thanks for the peace of mind. ❤️

Edit: UGH I hope not @(broken link removed) . I wash my hands all the time and always before having anything to do with the piggies. Atm I am not even picking them up and have not been since I started to feel sick last week. Well I guess whats done is done; I have been around them sweeping poopies and feeding. I am now on antibiotics so I guess we will just have to wait and see. They do have a vet appointment this week for their 2nd round of lice treatment so maybe I will just ask the Dr. to give them a once over to check them out.

Aww, get well soon. Pneumonia is no fun.
They'll probably be fine with just basic care as long as you're careful. Wash your hands before, try not to breath on them, and I agree with MissJean, cough in the bend of your elbow. They'll get along fine without lap time until you're feeling better.

It depends upon whether it's viral or bacterial. If it's viral, it's not contagious. If it's bacterial, it is.

Yeah, if I cough into my hands no matter where I am I go and wash them, no sense in stopping the germs from flying out and then spreading them around by touching everything :yuck:.

EDIT: No idea which it is, but i would assume it is bacterial; it took way to long to come on. I have been sick almost a week with just a really bad stuffy nose, began coughing 2 days ago but this AM when I woke up I was tired just by getting out of bed for coffee, and it hurt to breath so I knew something was wrong. Well I will do my best to be careful and not breath on them and keep my hands clean. Guess it is all I can do. Will brush up on signs of URI just in case and keep a very close eye on them the next couple weeks.
