One of my girls had some pretty hefty ovarian cysts. The diagnosis only came when we took her in for an apparent URI but which may have actually been an ear infection. The infection was taken care of and she was on baytril for a week after that. We took her to a specialist who diagnosed and later operated on the cysts as well as saying that the infection appears to be ear related and suggested continuing the baytril 2 more weeks.
The surgery was about 18 days ago. It went well. They removed 40g of material which is pretty big considering her weight a few weeks before was 1kg. After the initial antibiotics and loss of apetite she was down to 900 pre-op. Since the surgery, she has been losing around 5 to 10g/day pretty steadily. We confirmed immediately after the surgery that she was peeing and pooping though her poop was much diminished. It is now pretty close to the normal size and shape, but we can't nail down the volume since we never considered measuring her daily poop total before to have a value to compare to. Plus she lives with 2 other girls.
At this point she is showing interest in food, she will nibble on hay, eat fresh greens, and even pellets, plus drinking water. We are giving her 15cc of Critical Care 2x/day. She appears to have energy, she is moving around well, playing with the other girls almost more than before the surgery, and she seems to be in a good mood. (She used to be a bit of a nipper, but she hasn't bit me since the surgery).
Some days she stays even, some days she is down a little or more than a little. I am not sure what to do. We spent more than we should have for the surgery and medications so I'd like to avoid another visit just for the vet to say 'keep giving her CC' for $100, but I will if there is no other choice. She is off baytril now and isn't showing any other signs of infection or bad health. Maybe the baytril was affecting her diet and she will continue to regain her appetite now that she has been off it for a day or two? Does that sound likely?
Other things I have tried:
- Grinding up a healthy poop pellet from one of the other girls to include in the CC in case she needs a re-infusion of gut bacteria
- Feeding smaller volumes every 2 to 3 hours to try to get her gut moving at a more steady pace rather than two big feedings
- Offering fresh veggies and hay by hand (she will take them and shows interest but she doesn't eat as quickly or as much as before)
- We even rearranged the cage to put water and piles of hay at a couple different places in hopes that making things more convenient would motivate her.
Ideas? Anything is helpful.
