Well I have been to the vet numerous times now and GL site as well and still not sure what my one abby has. Let me try to describe it and the treatments she and all the other have had so far though she is the only one that has this condition on her.

One day months ago I noticed a small (maybe 1/2") red spot on her right hind flank and it was sensitive to touch so I took her to the vet. She also had what looks like flakes of dried skin all over her back half. Both the vet and I looked and the could not visually see any lice and the vet thought it was an infection so she treated her with (I forgot the name of the medicine) and we had to go through 2 bottles of it before the redness went away. However the flakes were still all over her so then the vet treated her and all my other piggies with ivermectin for 3 doses (the abby ended up getting 4 doses, 1 shot and 3 oral) orally. Now that the last dose was taken on friday I check and she still has the flakes. If she was a person I would think she had dandruff or psoraisis. Does anyone have any suggestions on this?? I am taking her back to the vet on tuesday if it has not changed but its stumping me as to what this could be and GL site doesnt have anything that describes what she has. She has no hair loss either except that one tiny spot where she had the infection. Anyone have any ideas for me that I might suggest to the vet?

Has the vet checked her for specific fungus's or ringworm?

I think the first thing she treated for was a skin infection using a GP safe antibiotic but I forgot the name of it now. It doesnt look like ringworm, at least the ringworm I have seen anyway.

ABs won't treat fungus. What do you mean by skin infection?

Have you tried ivermectin topically?

Does your piggy show any signs of discomfort? My piggy I thought had a pink spot that was sensitive also with white dandruff type flakes. I took her to the vet, also was treated with mite medication and I treated her with fungus shampoo in case there was fungus present, though I and my piggy found this bathing too stressful so I stopped. $200.00 later and my piggy is fine. Was always fine. I think the pinkness was just the hair part and the flakiness just dandruff like we get. If your piggy is not showing any symptoms of stress from this I would just keep an eye on it and let it be.

The one spot got red and was sensitive to touch but the AB's seemed to have cleared that up nicely. Other than that she seems perfectly fine other than the dandruff looking stuff. I just am going nuts trying to find out what is wrong if anything. Its interesting to hear that another GP has the same dandruff and seems fine.

All of mine seem to have dandruff in the same spot on their back. It seems to be genetic and NOT fungal.

Really? Wow that is interesting and I am hopeful that this is the same with mine. I think she did have an infection at the one red spot and the medicine cleared it up but the dandruff has not changed even a little and I really don't want to force medicine and stressful vet trips on her any more than is absolutely needed.

You'll have to use Head and Shoulders. LOL!

Sorry... couldn't help myself!

My pig is getting over ringworm currently, and it's more than just dandruff, so I'm sure it's not ringworm that your's has. Keep in mind, however, that ringworm is not always in a "ring" shape and can take any shape. Esp. in animals.

The red spot probably has nothing to do with the dandruff. Since the red spot cleared up I wouldnt concern myself too much with the flakes. As long as your piggy is not scratching at itself crazily and is doing fine then its most likely just plain old dandruff. Leave it alone.

Hmm... just curious.

Can piggies have bad dry skin? Like, in the bald spots behind their ears? Or if they did, would it be a symptom of some kind of vitamin deficiency? o_O Just wondering.

I can just see msyelf driving all over Dallas looking for a piggy-safe lotion... XD Go me!
