My piggie has had one of those little carboard hidey hole things since we got her... and she loves it so much that i dont wanna take it away (plus i havent been able to find a decent replacement yet)... but thats the oNLY place in the cage she pees, and then she sits in it, and i think she's starting to get scabs on her bottom because of it (i would say she might have mites, but she only scratches her bottom, and her fur is usually a bit damp there). any thoughts/advice? s orry this is badly written, very tired.

Dagwell likes to sit in his pee too and he has long hair it can get kinda nasty. Try moving the hidey house around the cage and to a dry spot a few times a day.

its not a house, its a tube, with a bottom, made of cardboard...

Well, that makes it harder, lol. You could always replace it with an empty oatmeal tube or a cardboard box. Pigs love most any hidey house... this is my boys favorite at the moment. (broken link removed) and really like towels draped over the side of their cage. Another hit is a small sterilite bin I bought and cut one of the sides off and turned into a hidey place.

Why dont you put a couple of well folded face washers or something in the tube, that wat the moisture is drawn away and you can easily replace them and they stay dryer.

Face washers?

Do paper towels/newspaper work too? As a temporary solution, i am putting a plastic tube of about the same size in with bedding inside..

ohh man, I dont wanna sound paranoid but she's already chewing the plastic tube. This won't hurt her, will it?

Newspaper isnt really very obsorbent. In Australia, a face washer is a small peice of towelling used to wash your hands/face etc. You may call it a flannel or something else. You could use a cut up towell instead I guess or something that will soak up the pee.
I wouldn't worry about her chewing it too much, the novelty will probally wear off.

Here we would just call it a hand towel. I use them for the bottom of my Timber Hide-A-Way on my upper level.

Yeah I can think of a few different names, same thing though.

Evidently you think there may be a chance she has mites so I would take her to the vet, especially since you state she is getting scabs and she is scratching.

Sorry but no matter how much she loves that tube, her health comes first. So when it's basically soaked and stinking, away with it. She'll love any hiding place you give her.

I agree. Piggy health first . . . then play . ..

Ditto with the above 2 posts. Try getting a new toy. I recommend getting a plastic step up stool. There's no base, so you can easily change the bedding underneath it when needed

You can take one grid of caging, and fold it into a "u" shape (by standing on it). With a little towel (washandje -!) over it, you have a really cozy tunnel.

thanks guys :) i am getting a pigloo to replace the tunnel tomorrow.

now i am having another problem. for the last couple days, when i hold her she continues to make cute little noises as i pet her, but she also is starting to chew on my shirt. she grabs a piece in her mouth and pulls as if she's trying to bite me. she wasnt doing thsi before and yesterday she actually put a hole in my shirt. is she angry or sick, or is this normal?

oh, and she's making a noise with her teeth too. i'm not sure if it's an angry noise or just chomping, but i dont remember her doing it before.

One of my pis also grabs and pulls on my shirt, I don't know what it is about. Don't let her do it if it annoys you. Is she making a chittering noise with her teeth, similar to the sound of a rattlesnake? That is annoyance and warning.

If it just little teeth clicks that sounds like she is chewing, that is normal behavior and I don't think that means much.

It could mean she needs to go pee . . .

As far as I know Guinea pigs like to chew and she may like your shirt because it smells of you.

I have a Guinea pig that likes to barber the other pigs fur. It's fine when she does it to her sister who is a Peruvian, but I have 2 Americans and they don't need or like to be barbered. I have one who can't get away like the others due to a disability, so she is constantly squealing. I keep telling her I'm going to get her a muzzle. It is times like this when I wish they understood just a little bit better. When I catch her and tell her no she stops and runs, but goes right back once I leave the room.
