Simple question about lights

I just purchased a guinea pig a few hours ago, and I'm wondering if it's alright to shut the lights off when I'm off to bed. It's a stupid question, but I really don't know.

Thanks for the help!

Yes, it is fine. I leave the night light on sometimes, but they are fine without it.

Here is a good care info site when you have time: https://www.guinealynx.info/healthycavy.html

Next time, you may want to look for guinea pigs in shelters or rescues. Pet stores that sell animals suck.

Welcome.

Your cavy needs a friend. Please adopt a same sex one from a rescue or shelter. www.petfinder.com is a good place too look.

What type of cage is your cavy in? Look at www.guineapigcages.com for size requirements.

What are you feeding your cavy?

The cavy is about a year old now, and I plan to get another one.

This is it's cage:

And it eats these little hard chunks of something called alphafa(sp) and some mix. I also have yogurt treats for him.

Thanks for the help and advice!

Your guinea pig looks a bit younger than a year from the picture. Don't feed them yoghurt treats. Not only are they a choking hazard, they are full of additives, fat and sugar and are bad for their health. Your cavy could benefit from a bigger cage and a friend.

A guinea pig is not an It.

You need plain guinea pig pellets, not that mix. He or she does look younger than a year, so they would need alfalfa based pellets and alfalfa hay. Look over www.guinealynx.info and www.petfinder.com, and (broken link removed) when you want to get her a friend.

I'm going to find a forum with nicer people. For some reason, you guys seem like ***** Thanks for helping anyway.

Name calling is NOT acceptable here, sorry if you didn't know that. You don't have to be rude, and who says they were being rude? The internet is the internet, you can not determine the tone of their voice, so you should ask if they were trying to be rude or something.

How bout no one argues. Okay? And appLe, you can come back and we'll help you out- but PLEASE, no one fight.. okay? It gets annoying.. yes, what appLe said was mean..but we need to not listen to that post and help her out.

www.guinealynx.com for great information on cavy care!

www.cavyspirit.com for some more great info,

https://www.guineapigcages.com for to make a cage (this site, but I think you knew)

Just let's not make a big deal out of this.. one of the mods can either delete or edit that post and let it be the end of it.. Let's just help her out..

Because we were telling you what you were doing wrong? You should at least look at the links.

I wish people would look around and get a feel for what this site and forum are about before posting questions. Pig-parents shouldn't get offended that they're told to get bigger cages (hopefully C&C cages) and shouldn't buy animals from pet stores. That's what this forum is ABOUT. If you want to told that it's okay to have your guinea pig live in a tiny plastic box and feed it yogurt drops, try another forum that cares less about the well-being of your pet.

As Napoleon Dynamite would say: "Geez!"

That being said, Hamlet is very cute.

Do you think guinea pigs prefer to have a night light? I currently don't have one for the girls but I wonder if they'd be more comfortable with one.

Awww, he's so cute! I really like his markings. Just check out the links; you'll have a happier healthier pet for sure. :)

Welcome to the site, and I guess goodbye also.

I recommend you read the links and take the advice you were provided by our members. They supplied you that information so you could give your pet a better life and get more enjoyment out of him.

If you are going to have a pet it makes sense to treat him well. Hamlet needs a bigger cage (your cage is too small with very little ventilation), better food, unlimited hay, appropriate daily veggies, and an owner that cares about his pet's happiness and wellbeing.

One last thing. Consider yourself officially warned. Name calling and swearing is not allowed on this forum.

Hamlet is such a cutie! appLe I hope you still visit this site. There is a wealth of information here. Your lights question was not stupid at all. The topic came up last month and several were wondering about it too.

Please understand that the people on this site are very serious about guinea pigs. They love theirs very much and can become very upset when other guineas are not getting what is needed for a healthy guinea pig life. It just so happens your post had several guinea pig oops's in it. Most of us made mistakes at first with our guineas because we did not fully research them. The main thing is to keep learning about what is best for them, and that is what the people on this site will help you do. So let's start fresh, just like what Ruby recommended in her post.
