Signs of a URI

What are the signs of a URI? Peanut has been acting weird so I am going to ask my mom if we can take her to the vets this weekend. She is still eating, she is just kind of hunched over and has had a stuffy/runny nose for awhile now.

Pigs hide their illness' well. If it is a URI, waiting til this weekend is too far away. They go down hill very fast. Read the above link and get to a vet asap.

Well I think she was just sleeping, because I chamged their cage to a 2x3x2x4 and they both were running around, eating hay, drinking, chasing each other and Peanut seemed fine. I don't think it is a URI anymore I was just curious of the signs. I want to take Peanut to the vet anyway because she has had a runny/stuffy nose for awhile but no other signs.

She may be hiding her illness. If she had/has a runny/stuffy nose, get her to the vet as soon as you are able. If you wait, URI's can be deadly. It's better to be safe than sorry. A runny nose sometimes is the only sign of a pig with a URI.

How long has she had the runny/stuff nose? Weeks? One of my pigs has a chronic runny nose and sneezing. After 2 antibiotics, my vet finally decided it's not a URI, but rather a chronic viral infection which for some reason my pig is unable to fight off. There is also the possibility of a dust allergy, but my vet thinks this is rare.

Have you been weighing your pig regularly? That's a great way to determine how sick they are. Like other posters said, they are very good at pretending they're well when they're not.

There are many indicators - all or some may be present...
  • Listlessness
  • Wheezing
  • Coughing and sneezing
  • Crackly chest
  • Increased or decreased breaths
  • Runny nose
  • Open mouth and laboured breathing - they often have trouble breathing through the nose, and it is obvious when they are struggling to do so
I'm sure there are also several more. I had a guinea pig die of a URI and he was at the vet the day after he started showing signs. I still lost him. Time is critical, get her to the vet as soon as possible. If she is hunched over, this would give me cause for concern, as it suggests she is in pain.

I'm sorry for your loss, daftscotslass. Is it possible your vet didn't give you the right antibiotic or the right dose? I've found a lot of vets give a very conservative dose, which is often not right. I lost a pig due to a URI, but it was due to getting a small dose of an incorrect antibiotic.
