I read that guinea pigs like to play with shredded paper. I was wondering, does it have to be shredded news paper or can it be any kind of paper (like old tax documents). Does the ink form a risk if they eat it.

I would say stick to the newspaper, just to be on the safe side

it can also be plain white paper, I believe. So you can rip of the unprinted end of any junk mail, shred it up, and throw it in. however, it shouldn't be glossy or have any print on it

I dont think ink would hurt them, but im not completely sure. News paper has ink too.

ink really isnt good for them unless it is soy based, and most newspaper companies print with soybase ink. thats why newspaper is ok but tax docs and legal docs and printed mail is not

Prefer black & white paper. No color pages.

Mine like paper towels. I found this out when I left the paper towel roll next to their cage after cleaning it. They grabbed an edge, pulled a bunch of towels into the cage and shredded them.

toilet paper rolls? I'm pretty sure this is safe but I just wanted to be sure. I think they'd have fun pulling the paper out of the rolls and breaking it. plus, its so soft!

Shredded paper, if you shredded computer paper wouldn't it hurt their little feet, couldn't they get cuts? I think news paper would be better. Oh I use this white tissue paper (I got it at the dollar store) my piggy loves to run through it if I shred it up. He also likes to burrow in it. And because tissue paper is so thin, he can't get cuts on his feet. I also shred paper towels, (I get two rolls for $1 with 104 sheets) they like those too. But I can get the tissue paper free sometimes.

You can also get blank newspaper (often sold at packing or storage places). Then you don't have to worry about the ink. I used to get it for my bird cage but I don't remember what it cost.

I don't think they would have a problem with the cuts, but then again, I don't really recommend using shredded paper of any kind as bedding. It isn't really that absorbent (yes, even the paper towels) and it will require more cleaning than usual. Fleece would be a better bet--if you are cleaning often anyhow, it's probably better. Though it would be safe to use paper, I don't think it's the best way to go. Just my opinion.

Nope definantly not the way to go, too hard to clean out, I am still afriad of cuts, and it doesn't really absorb. You would have to clean it out every day.
