I volenteer at a shelter, andthey recently got a VERY young cavy. He is about the size of a hamster, and I know that is how big they are born. They belive he is a month old, but I'm not to sure. He eats solid food and all, but is he to young to be away from a mother? He was abandoned alone, so I cannot be sure.

Also, I was hoping to adopt him when my cage is bigger.

I wish I could help but I have never had one that young! Maybe if I bump the post up someone else could help!

Hmmm... it is probably just old enough to leave its mom if it's a month old. I think that if he made it this far, he should be fine... poor little guy. Just make sure he gets plenty of veggies, hay, and alfalfa pellets daily.

well, pups are supposed to be seperated from their mum at three weeks of age, so yes, he is old enough.

They don't know his exact age, he still has a tiny peice of umbilicle cord, so I can't tell. But if they can be seperated at 3 weeks of age, then he shoudl be fine.

true........but now i have a question

for all those of you whose females happened to get preggers, about what size are the babies at five weeks of age?

i got my piggies at 4 weeks old. So they can be separated from their mothers at that time. even earlier because the mother wasn't with them when i got them. They were a little bigger than hamsters though. Just try to take the best care of it!! veggies, alfalfa, timothy hay, fresh water... im sure you know though! the usual!

My guinea pigs are five weeks now and they are pretty big but not too near to full grown. Bigger than hamsters. Guinea pigs are born pretty big so you know. lol = D

A preggy mommy of mine, her babies were maybe 5-7 inches when five weeks of age, maybe four. I never really measured them, they are 2 months now so that can't really help. Sorry!

I had to hand rear three babies after their mom died. Make sure he is kept warm. Mine were fed Evaporated or condenced(wich ever has the less sugar) milk mixed with water every two hours. Also if you soak the pellets in water so their a little fluffy it helps. You have to stimulate their bowels too. Just for about two weeks. I fed mine out of a syringe. You give it to them just like liquid meds. If he is only the size of a hamster he probably is younger than three weeks.

why do u ask loves2travel? do you want me to measure my guinea pigs??

Um.... I think she was just trying to help figure out how old they are.
