Hello - showing these designs to my husband who is a sheet metal worker. He says he can build a tray/bottom out of sheet metal completely removing any rought edges. Good or bad idea???

when i was younger and had guinea pigs, my father made a trade that was sligly larger then the metal rabbit cage they were in (yes I know, slightly small!!)

The edges were smoothed down, and came about 4" up the outside of the cage. I could life the cage up out of the pan, then clean/wash the pan.

Knowing what I know now, I still think that it was a good idea, I actually think we still have those cages in our attic! haha

I guess there would be pros and cons to metal trays. Cons would be that it could rust over time from urine or other wetness and it may be harder to clean than coroplast.

I might be concerned about any uncovered parts being either too hot in summer (in direct sunlight?) or too cold in winter. Using fleece and towels and papers would insulate the base to some extent - but you would have to pull the fleece up and over the edges to cover them.

How heavy would it be? Would weight be an issue?

Thank you all - good points. We are adopting and I'm looking for something rather quickly to get her home as soon as possible. We have lots of the sheet metal available. It is pretty lightweight but it may be too cold for her. I'll keep looking for the colorplast too.
