I want to give my guineas a bath, but we do not have any stores around her that carry the type of shampoos recommended for guineas. I was wondering if it would be ok to use a baby shampoo or even a very mild soap like ivory?

Hope this helps:)

I use baby shamppo.

I use head and shoulders.

I just use a plain boring shampoo, just a little drop.

I have something here called baby wash by dove and its hypoallergenic, so I think I will use that even though it is not technically a shampoo, but it does say that it can be applied to the scalp so I believe it would be safe.

I use dog shampoo. Its safer for themto ingest and its more mild for their skin.

You slaves are supposed to use a shampoo formulated for pigs or bunnies. Baby shampoo isn't good and neither is human shampoo. Never use a shampoo formulated for dogs or cats. These types of shampoos will dry out their skin and pigs skin is more sensitive and has a totally different Ph balance than we do. I got some Four Paws Bunny Bath and it works great.

But according to this guy (broken link removed), human and baby shampoo is fine. I use it and there is nothing wrong with my pigs.

IMO, that guy is worthless. I was wrong however about using shampoo for cats, actually you can use a mild non-pesticidal shampoo formulated for cats. I just checked over at gl. I looked up a thread over there and it said that shampoos formulated for humans contain a much different Ph balance than shampoos made for bunnies and pigs. I personally am not going to do anything that "might" do more harm than good for my pigs skin. I only have to give "butt baths" about once every 6 weeks to 2 of my girls anyway.

I can't tell you what to do, but I am offering suggestions of alternatives.

I use guinea pig shampoo... Apples.. hmmm.
What does IMO mean? Hehe, I've always been wondering.
Oh yeah, Coco, I love your piggy in the avatar! Is that Coco?

IMO=In my opinion. Yep, that's CoCo in my avatar. I will post pictures of all the girls in a minute for you.

I agree with Chatty CoCo--that guy is worthless. :)

I have tried to get guinea pig shampoo, but I live in a fairly small town and our pet stores do not carry any, also their suppliers do not carry it, so there is no way that i can order any and I really can't afford the stuff that is sold at the vet for something I will rarely use. I went to the store and looked at the ingredients of all of the different shampoos and i got one that has only soap in it with nothing else, no fragrances or moisturizers or all of that junk. I found out that the one I was originally going to use had moisturizers in it and i wasen't sure how safe that would be.
While researching I came across a site somewheres that said that you could give your guineas dust baths. I thought this was only for chinchillas. Does anyone know if these actually work???

Nope, that's just for Chins. There's a lot of false advice out there. :)

I used to used puppy, tear-free shampoo, but I recently found out that the pet store I usually go to carries a guinea pig shampoo.

bunny shampoo would work, pretty much any small animal shampoo

Ummm dagwell, did you bother to read the whole thread or just skip it all. Bunny shampoo was mentioned already and you can't use just any small animal shampoo. You must stay away from any small animal shampoos that contain pesticides-like flea and tick shampoos.

Chattycoco, that's not particularly correct. My vet prescribed a shampoo for my pigs that I use often and it has mites/lice preventatives. I've used it several times and it has yet to dry out their skin or do harm. And also, you could ask your vet if they carry shampoos.

Vet prescribed is different than going to the store and buying puppy lice/tick shampoo to wash your pigs with. I don't need to ask my vet if they carry shampoo because I use Four Paws Bunny Bath. If my pigs get mites, they get treated with Ivermectin. I don't even know if I would use a shampoo with mite/lice preventatives in it anyways because I would be afraid the pigs would lick it off themselves and ingest it. Thats why most people treat mites with ivermectin or revolution.
