Semi-Newbie owner

Hello, My name is Pete. I have owned Petunia for a year now. I got her because my ferret died and ferrets are just hard to clean after. My wife and 3 kids love to play with her. We have Petunia in a pet store cage now, after seeing this site its time to get rid of it and get a cavy cage. We have other pets like 2 dogs and 7 cats. Petunia makes this high pitch squeel when ever we open our refridgerator which normally means she wants a carrot. I do have one question, is it ok to put another female gp thats younger in the new cage with her?

Yes it is ok and I highly suggest it!

Petunia will be much happier with a same sex buddy with her, because guinea pigs are very social animals and need companionship.

For two girls you will need at least a 2x3 C&C cage. Or even better a 2x4.

Oh and please adopt your next guinea pig from a rescue if possible because getting one from a petstore adds to the demand for breeding guinea pigs leaving some in shelters and makes it so there are more homeless guinea pigs being put to sleep everyday...

Also take your piggy to a vet to determine it's gender because if you got your first piggy from a petstore then they might have sexed it incorrectly and it is unsafe to put your guinea pig through an accidental (or purpose) pregnancy because 1 out of every 5 guinea pigs die from complications during a pregnancy....

Guineas love buddies!

I'm getting a male/female pair, the boy is neutered, and as far as I've heard, they get along better. Same sex pairs sometimes have dominance issues. But, you can take your pig with you to pick one out and I'm sure she'll pick who she wants for a roommate. Try PetFinder. There are hundreds of Guinea Pigs there all in rescues near you. That's where I found my pair!
