I was wondering if guinea pigs can give eachother hair cuts.....I know it sounds silly BUT my Daisy, a long haired girl seems to have hair that is getting shorter.

I drilled my kids and husband if they had gone in and cut Daisy's hair and they all said no. But bit by bit the hair that covers her face has been getting shorter and shorter each day. My husband brought up maybe she was getting it caught on something so I went in the cage a looked at EVERYTHING not a single square inch had anything that could catch and rip hair. Plus no clumps of hair were found!

So I am left wondering if the girls ( I have four girls all together ) have somehow been doing Daisy the favour and trimmed her hair for her. I have been thinking of doing because Daisy's hair is so long that she has been shakin it out of the way to get around.

Any ideas? I will try to post a picture of her sometime today to show the hair.....it really looks like someone cut little chunks off.

It's a mystery

Yup, as said above it's called barbering :] You can read about it hear on Guinea Lynx: Guinea Lynx :: Hair Loss It's really nothing to worry about and while a piggie may look a little silly with their new haircut they're not worried about their own appearance. I think pigs with fringes are particularly attractive to barber pigs!

Sometimes pigs will stop doing this as well. Our dominant sow used to barber another sows whiskers when they first met but after a few weeks she stopped of her own accord.

Make sure your pigs have enough hay--sometimes barbering can be a way to get more fiber in the diet. Otherwise, one of your pigs thinks she's a stylist, or else wants to show Daisy who's boss.

A bit unrelated I know but My new pig Stanley was sitting on my shoulder, hiding in my hair and i didnt think anything of it..until the next day i found my poor hair lying on the floor looking like it had been cut. I spent ages thinking oh my god I'm going bald until I read this thread. Could stanley have chewed it out?? Or is my boyfriend secretly cutting chunks of my hair out. It was about 3 inches long so its not like its just fallen out of my head (my hair is down past my shoulders)

Hes not the most social pig yet but we'e only had him a few days

He probably thought you needed a slight restyle. Pigs can be very cheeky that way.
Luckily I've only had my hair nibbled, not actually chewed off. And luckily all my other pigs respect Tuppy's beauty and usually leave her hair alone - though once or twice Charlie has pulled and nibbled her hair while he's mounting her and she's in heat.

Suzi really hated my hair and used to yank it out of my scalp.

This is all very amusing to read!

My guinea pig Dudley likes to show his mate Daphne that he's boss by pulling out a few butt hairs every now and again. Specifically if he wants a drink of water while she's drinking, or if they hear me chopping veggies and he gets impatient waiting.

It doesn't get aggressive beyond that, though. It's just his way of putting her in her place.

My pigs will chew/eat each others' hair. It's nothing to worry about. And they will try to eat my own hair sometimes as well, when I am holding them or they can reach it. I just blame all my split ends on them! lol

I don't think I have lack of hay to blame.....they have 2 really large hay racks that are over filled at all times. They like it when I let the hay over hang the holder so it provides a little hay tunnel for them to go into. So I don't think it is for more fiber, Daisy's hair has been hanging over her face and the barber only seems to be cutting her bangs.

Maybe it is just as a favour to Daisy then anything else.

Seems you have a piggy stylist. Giving the other one a favor. I never knew that though about guineapigs. I guess you learn new things everyday.
