i just got home from work, and my neutered boar is bleeding from his geintals. the vets are closed! will he make it until 7am tomorrow when they open?

he had a bladder infection before, and was treated with antibiotics. but this seems worse.

he's 6 years old. my first pig.

i'm so worried, what can I do till the morning?

Yes, you should check that other forum. I understand that it can be a pretty scary experience. I have a Guinea Pig named Chutter and I've had him for about six years now, and I would do the exact same thing for him.

Call A Vet. Vet Vet Vet.

Oh, gosh! I know how you feel, that happened to my hamster! Are any other nearby exotic vets open? You should go see a vet right away!

I hope she was able to get the pig to the vet this morning. Poor baby.

Sorry i took so long with an update, I stayed up all night worrying.

So even tho our emegency vet isn't an exotic, I decided to take him anyways, I was too worried. They didn't really know anything, but they gave me a guinea pig safe antibiotic, sulfatrim, to treat a urinary tract infection.

Then I woke up at 7, and got an appt with his reg vet for 4 pm, their next open appt, so someone that knows their stuff will look at him.

Good news, he's eating hay and veggies and still drinking.
Tho he's not as active as he usually is.

I hope I've done everything right by him. His name is Homer, he's the one in the picture on all my posts, my first rescue.
Thanks for all the replies.

p.s. I would have gone to guinea lynx, but i don't have the right kind of email for it. I just have hotmail and they don't accept it. i don't have my own internet account.

I'm glad you got him checked out, even if it is a vet that doesn't know much about cavies. The appointment with his regular vet is a very good follow up. Homer is very cute, and it would be very sad if anything happened to him. You are a responsible guinea pig mom.

Homer is cute ^^ I'm glad that he's ok. I love any guinea pig, no matter what. I know what it feels like to lose a pig. I'm hoping you don't have to for a long time ^^

KatieJean, I hope Homer's doing better this evening. That must have been very scary!! I know I freak if one of my boys has a speck of hay dust in his eye, but blood??!!

Also wanted to add as an FYI - you DO NOT have to have an account with GuineaLynx in order to Search their Emergency and Medical forum archive. This is valuable information for EVERY pig owner, not just the ones registered there, so it's available to all. Just go to the page, click the SEARCH button in the upper right, and go from there.

well he had his follow up, and they did an ultra sound and couldn't find any stones, so thats good. The vet thinks its a UTI but there wasn't enough urine to do a uranalysis, so i'm suppose to bring in a sample to find out more, and keep up with the antibiotics in the mean time. Also make sure he gets lots of water and moves around to keep the system going. Do you think I should syringe him some water? so hopefully he'll make a full recovery, yay :)

How does one get a urine sample from a guinea pig?

Good question. Perhaps like they do from uncooperative cats, they aspirate it directly from the bladder?

I'll defer to those more knowledgeable, but that's my uneducated guess.

well thats what they were gonna do, but the vet was worried about further iritating it, so i'm suppose to wait for a puddle and syring it up. pretty wild!
