Just last Saturday he was his normal self, but over this week something doesnt seem right. He is not eating his pellets much, and he is excited for veggies, but when I gave carrots yesterday, he only nibbled on each and every carrot.

He is still eating hay like crazy. When he hears my voice, he gives a little squeak. Thought maybe he was in pain, but seems normal walking. I am keeping my eye on him. Just a gut feeling.

I noticed on Monday, he did chew thru his wood ball, and the plastic ball was left in cage, I took it out immediately, and non of it was eaten. In the pastic ball was 2 metal balls to make noise, they didnt seem though that could have gotten loose for him to eat. He just turned 3 years old :(

I only have one pig...Could he be slowing down with old age? Is 3 considered old?

Has he lost weight? Any discharge from eyes or nose?

Bloat is also a possibility when loss of appetite is involved.

Either way, a vet visit is in order to rule out or confirm anything that is going on with Twix.

3 years old is not considered old. Guinea pigs live 5-7 years on average.

jayval, I've merged your threads. Please do not start multiple threads on the same sick pig -- it makes it very hard for people to keep up with what's going on, and you'll actually get less help because people won't take the time to chase back through the earlier threads.

It is with said heart, that I had to put Twix down...I am so sad, but the vet thought it was best...His bladder was so enlarged, from not urinating from a big kidney stone..Dr. said if he went thru surgery, they didnt think he would make it...Plus, he was in so much pain.....Please say a prayer! Twix was only 3...Im so confused how this just happens so quickly, he was a normal healthy guinea pig, one week ago...Have any of you experience this?

I'm so sorry about Twix. Guinea pigs often hide illnesses very well, so that you don't even notice anything is wrong until it's almost too late. He probably had the stone for a while, you just couldn't tell.

I know its hard and I'm very sorry for your loss. Guinea pigs are just that good at hiding illnesses. He's in good hands now and he'll be watching over you. I still talk to my Star I have his ashes on my dresser. I'm sure he had the best life. Run free little one R.I.P.

Thank you for your replies! This is so hard for me, not to mention my daughter who just turned 6, last week...It was more my guinea pig then hers....My heart is breaking...I am not used to going thru a loss like this...I was so attached to Twix....My bro-in-law has had a lot of pigs, so he has helped me too...I just never thought it was that....He was in so much pain today....Thanks for your support...

The sad part is I just bought him a loft 6 months ago, and he loved it...We had such a special bond, esp the past year...I guess I just never expected this...

Im so sorry for your loss. Gpigs leave special spots on our hearts. My sweet Peanut Butter passed in January and her ashes are on my shelf beside a nice pic of her. They also save a bit of her hair that I have in the picture too. It helps.

Know he is no longer in pain and running, popcorning and eating all the hay he can over the Rainbow Bridge.

Thanks everyone! It was a tough decision, and I have never had a close pet die....This was really hard for me, esp since my daughter was with me, and then we were both crying...I thought I would be able to hold it together talking with the Dr, but I totally broke down....I guess, in a way its a good lesson about loss for my 6 yr old....She has never experienced this yet...He kept hunching back every one in pain...So sad to watch....

I'm so sorry for your loss :(. It's so hard to lose one of them. I'll never forget when my guinea pig Precious was put down a few years ago. It was so heartbreaking, but the vet felt there was no way to save him.
