I just bought a bag of Spring Salad mix for my piggy's, just wondering if all this stuff is okay for them...

Lollo rossa, frisee, mizuna, radicchio, red leaf lettuce, green leaf lettuce, green romaine, red romaine, green beet tops, green oak leaf lettuce, red oak leaf lettuce and red beet tops.

Well, i just googled some of the ones I didn't know, and yes dandelion, everything here sounds great!
Lollo rossa looks like a variety of red lettuce, frisee is simply curly endive, and mizuna is Japanese mustard greens. It sounds like a great mix of leafy veggies to give your pigs to provide good variety in their diet, and as far as I can tell, none of these are too high in calcium, so it should be good for a "regular" food choice.

Ok I think I may have lied. Looks like beet tops, in comparison to beets themselves, have an overall high calcium content of 117mg compared to 16mg for beets (see this website for a nutritional chart: (broken link removed))
Now what I'm not entirely sure of is whether this is a reletively high calcium content or not in comparison to other veggies. Maybe some of the seasoned veterans can take a look and clarify this for you!

Thanks for your help. I just looked up beet tops and they are high in calcium. But I think it will be okay since it is mixed with all the other vegetables too, so it isn't like they will be getting just beet tops. It soo annoying how most of the vegetables that are high in Vitamin C are high in calcium. I just bought kale today too and noticed it also has a high calcium content, and also the parsley i've been feeding them. The only vegetable that I can find that is high in Vit. C and low in calcium are peppers. Also I just bought Kaytee Timothy Hay Pellet food today because I noticed the other guinea pig food I was feeding them (Martins Guine Pig Food) first ingredient was alfalfa hay not timothy and Coco and Taz were getting fat. I think finding them a good diet has been the hardest thing about them...but Ill keep trying because I love them soo much!

Cilantro is also a good daily vegetable

There are many people on gl who feed their pigs spring mix. There isn't enough beet tops in it to really do any harm.

Dandelion, try www.oxbowhay.com for good pellets.

Sorry to high jack your thread.. but is cilantro the same thing as corriander?

Yup, same thing!

yeah, we call it coriander rachy.

I buy exactly the same. My piggies love this the best.

Ok thanks Pennick! I know this isn't related to salad mix, but how do you get your piggy's to eat a new type of pellet food. I tried mixing them together but they just pick out the one they like (their original food) and then squeal for more, not even touching the other pellets?

What kind of new pellets are you feeding?

Kaytee Timothy Complete

I originally was giving them a store bought pellet with the seeds and all. As soon as I read the posts about better pellets and not feeding seeds I immediately switched to another pellet. This pellet was much larger than the original one and I also mixed them together. Piggies were not too happy. Then I read here about Oxbow's pellets and how nutritious they were. I didnt know the size but I ordered them anyway. They were the tiny pellets and my piggies love them. They dont like the larger pellets.

Are your new pellets the same size as the old ones?

Well I've being doing more research, and I guess my question about introducing new pellets won't be needed right now. I still need to be feeding them alfafa pellets because they are young and the new ones were timothy based. So right now I am sticking to the brand I have because I can't seem to find anything better. I can't afford to buy from oxbowhay.com because I live in Canada and I can't afford to pay $10 just for shipping, plus the exchange rate on the cost per bag. I know! I am probably not being a good owner, but I think its more important for them to have food period.
But to answer your question Pennick the ones I have now are kind of round, almost like a little ball, the new ones I got (which I will not be using) are long and thin. Also I noticed last night when they got the new ones wet that they expand and turn to mush very easily, so they are probably not that good.

Oh, well somebody on guinealynx just gave me a website where I can order Oxbow food in Canada...now I have another option!

The oxbow are small thin long ones. I am also feedin the alfalfa. When I finish this bag I will then order the Oxbow Cavy Cuisine, that would be the timothy since my guinea pigs will be aprox. 10 mos. old. I dont think I ever saw round ones. Well I guess there are many kinds of food. I'm sure you are a great owner.
