Hey everyone! Im new to making cages and im trying to build an awesome mansion for the piggies im about to adopt. How ever im not sure how to attach the dowls to the ramp for traction.
Are glues safe? Wood glue? Hot glue? Epoxi? Im not sure and they are so small for baby screws. Ill attach a picture to show what i mean.
Thanks for all you help! Cant wait to adopt my new babies!!!!

I can't speak for glues, however, that looks small (although with nothing to go on as far as scale, it makes it hard to judge).

Guinea pigs really do better in at least a pair. They need a lot of space to be able to properly run around and get excercise. There is a full gallery in this forum of cage pics if you need some ideas. (Posting from phone with limited signal, please forgive my not providing link.)

For a pair of sows (females), it is suggested a minimum of 2x4 (that's speaking in grids as measurement, the grids are 14 in square, so that's more than 2x4 feet) - I believe the actual number is 10 sq feet, boars (males) need more space than that. However more space is always preferred.

Additional levels up (that she second "floor" / loft) doesn't count into the square footage because they need open areas to run around.

Sorry. So many don't seem to realize how much space.

My pigs never like the ramp with wood dowels. They like something soft on their feet. I line my ramps with bath rugs.

You will need side rail for the upper part of the ramp.

Make sure to also line the cage with some sort of waterproof cover, unless the base you have is not wooden. Guinea pigs will also sometimes spray their pee and it might get on the sides of the cage and soak into the wood. Trust me, wood that's been peed on by a guinea pig smells really bad.

Good luck with your new piggies! Thank you for adopting :) Screw all the pet stores.

The bottom is covered in pond linner, really thick plastic. The side ate wood and plaexiglass so they can see out. But the wood is treated with non toxic toy paint. I can wait to show a picture when im done ❤️
I was going to cover everthing with fleece so maybe if i use hot glue it would be ok since im covering it anyways?

O no problem! I totlay get it. Ive been doing research for several months before I started the cage let alone I haven't even decided to adopt quite yet I want everything perfect before I get them

Yes, please do post pictures of the cage! I would love to see it.

Here is what i have so far. [GuineaPigCages.com] Safe ways to attach wooden dowls for stairs

How are you going to get the fleece under that wooden house?

Its not attached so i can pic it up and clean it and under it and then change out the fllece. The house is string ehough to hold my 220 pounds standing on it. :)
im a seamstress so i also have all sorts of fun stuff planned for them

I have found that the best thing for supplying traction on the ramps is stair tread material which I attach with a high-temperature hot glue gun (my favorite craft accessory). Easy to clean and lasts a long time.

You can find the material in the flooring section at Home Depot......it comes on a roll and I buy something like 3 feet at a time which is enough to last for several years. Of course, you apply the tread material so that the ribs run transversely.
