Sabrina's legs aren't working :(

Do not cancel the Vet appointment. There are several possible reasons for paralysis. You will need the vet to do x-rays. It could be a calcium deficiency, scurvy, and other possible reasons. Is this pig exhibiting any other symptoms besides paralysis in the hind quarters and sores on the back legs? Did this seem to come on gradually or all of a sudden?

The best advice I can give you right now is to post this question on gl. For the members here- if you don't have good medical knowledge, it's better to refer to gl than to give advice that might end up making the pig worse.

After reading your initial post a couple more times, this seems to have come on gradually. After doing some research at gl, the sores on the legs and the paralysis seem to concur with a Vitamin C deficiency, but I am not a vet. Only a vet will be able to conclusively diagnose this condition. But you can get some plain chewable childrens Vitamin C 100 mg tablets and give 50mg tonight. Just make sure they are sugar free or very low in sugar.

Yes, it sounds like perhaps scurvy. SEE A VET!!

FROM NOW ON, DO NOT GUESS. I DO NOT WANT POOR MEDICAL ADVICE GIVEN ON THIS FORUM.

OR You will lose your posting priveleges for a week.

can anyone tell me from past experience about how much an xray costs?

$40-80 depending on the vet

What if we think we know what it is ,and we refer to GL, is that okay?

T wants you refer to gl rather than to guestimate. If it sounds like something more obvious like a possible URI or UTI AND you have medical knowledge, then it would probably be ok to say "It sounds like _______ but you really need to see a vet. Try posting on guinealynx to get more help". Under no circumstances does T want you to give any advice concerning medications regarding their dosage or to "try this and see what happens" kind of advice on medications. It could end up endangering a pig.

Yes, do get to a cavy savy vet.

What are you feeding her and what type of cage do you have?

What breed is your sow? Are you the only one that handles her?

After doing some more research and talking to my husband we decided to wait another day or two because I realized what she had on her legs were not soars just her fur pattern.. duh. When I started looking at her vitamin suppliment the girl at the pet store had given me I realized it had NO vitamin C in it!! The poor girl was getting very little Vitamin C. Ifeel so horrible. Thank the Lord I figured it out. Just goes to show you that not everyone at a pet store knows what they are talking about ( But I did go out and get her some super charged vitamin C and I've been giving her that and loads more veggies and she's already starting to show improvment. Her left leg works just fine now and her right leg is not dragging as much. My poor baby.. But she is acting much happier and moving around more. Thank you all for your replies.

Then I'm guessing like Ly said, it was scurvy which might have lead to paralysis.

So you didn't take her to the Vet?

When I started looking at her vitamin suppliment the girl at the pet store had given me I realized it had NO vitamin C in it!!
Get rid of that vitamin supplement, your pig does not need it.

Ditto. Read over the diet info at GL.
