rusty cage?

i got this cage from a friend and it hasnt been used for awhile and its kinda rusty on some parts...mostly near the top but some closer to the bottom. i was wondering if rust is harmful if they chew it or something??

I would not use it. You should build a c&c cage. They are better, and mine was cheaper than a storebought cage. It also depends on how many pigs your getting. You should be getting two. But if you only get one you have to pay lots of attention to them.

well i forgot to mention i would only use it temporarly until i have money saved and then until i have time to go out and buy it... ya im kinda hesitent to use it even for a short while. humm... is it like really dangerous though? o sadly im only aloud to get one piggy or none at all. but its gonna get tons of attention cuse it will be the only pet in the whole house.

I would not put it in the rusty cage. What you can to is buy the wire cubes and use the bottom of the cage and put the wire cubes around it. But that would also have to be temporary.

It's SUPER dangerous, please please please don't use it!!! Beg your parents to spend the money to get the grids...tell them you'll work extra hard to pay them back, whatever you have to do! If (more like when) they chew on that rust they could be poisoned. NOT a safe option, truly.

Can you just get the grids and maybe put a sheet on the floor and just make a small floor cage for temporary? You would have to have towels or maybe a plastic table cloth under the sheet to keep the pee from soaking in the floor, but it should be ok...for temp only though.

I didn't see where you live, but if you live near me (southern cal) I have some extra grids I was going to use to make a top, but you can have them if you need them. I think you need them more than me! It'll make you a small (like a 2x3) cage, but it's better than a rusty cage that could possibly kill your pig!

Rust is iron oxide, a source of iron. I doubt it would be toxic to them, especially in the small amount that they might chew off. Wire cages are usually zinc galvanized. I would worry more about that Still, in the amount that they might chew, if at all, I doubt it would be a problem.

I totally disagree with that, and if you think it's so safe, why don't you chew on it and see how great you feel afterwards. It is toxic to them (as well as us...why do you think we get tetnus shots??).

The important thing here is the health and safty of your pigs, I personally wouldn't take the chance.

where are you going to house him/her until you get your c&c cage.

i recently convinced my parents to get me two guinea pigs, and they were so excited by the c&c cage since it was so cheap(well, cheaper in our particular case because we had two extra pack of grids just hidden away, unused, in the attic - we pulled it out and voila! perfect!) and they really love the versatility and being able to make your own design out of the cubes.
