About 3 or 4 weeks ago we took home 2 guinea pigs from petsmart. We now know better, but sadly our little Izzy has passed away.
We took her to the vet shortly after we got her because we noticed there was something off about her respiratory rate. The vet did an xray and found out she had some fluid surrounding her lower pulmonary region and put her on 2 weeks worth of antibiotics, which seemed to help her for a little while - she got back up to a healthy weight on a good diet and loved her vegetables. But she was still doing the same labored breathing pattern. We took her for another xray on Thursday, and it seemed more fluid had built up and our vet recommended an ultrasound guided aspiration so they could culture the fluid. We agreed. Come to find out when they were doing the ultra sound they also found a lot of fluid build up in her pericardium, so they drained and cultured the fluid, gave her antibiotics by injection, and kept her overnight, just in case.
Sadly she got exceedingly worse overnight. Her temperature dropped, they had to put her in the incubator and on oxygen, she wouldn't eat, all she was concentrating on was just breathing. The vet called and recommended euthanasia, but we wanted to say goodbye before hand. Our exotics vet is a good 45 minutes away and I cried all the way. We sat in the exam room and waiting for them to bring her out to us, but our vet came in and explained that when he went to pick her up to bring her to us, she stressed out, gasped for air a little and passed. :weepy:
Part of me thinks I should have just agreed over the phone to put her to sleep, maybe she wouldn't have left this world scared :ashamed: that breaks my heart. I can't help feeling a little selfish for it.
We had a necropsy done to figure out what happened and maybe get a little closure. We asked to have her cremated and are picking her ashes up later this week.
RIP Izzy... we will miss your big personality and your crazy hair. Ellie just isn't the same without you either. :weepy:
