My step-mother called and said that Butter (one of my boars) had scratches on him that were bleeding a bit and so she took him to the vet. The vet said that he has ringworms. I've never heard of piggies having ringworm. I thought he would be scratching like that because of mites or lice. Has anyone every heard of this?

Yes, pigs can get ringworm and humans can catch it from them!

Yeah, I knew that humans can get it from animals. I just didn't know they got it too. I guess that's one thing anyone can get. UGH! I wanted to make sure the vet knew what he was talking about.

Yes ringworm is awful.I just had it last summer, a big circle on the back of my leg and it itches like crazy. I hope your pig gets better.

Ring worm is very common in Skinnies.

They can get ringworm, but was it a cavy savy vet you've seen before?

My step-mother took him to the vet. It's not the same vet I have here. They had to move to my dad's house about a month ago because I developed a really bad allergy to them. I'm going over there tonight. I'll have to ask her about the vet. I had told her before that if they had to go to a vet to make sure it was a vet that KNOWS guinea pigs - really knows them.

If it is ringworm, everyone that handles them should wash very carefully
afterwards and/or wear rubber gloves. Ringworm is a fungus that is very
contagious to many mammals including humans. IT is very treatable though in all species.

The vet gave my step-mom a special shampoo to bathe them and all four have had their baths. (I'm sure that was a sight to behold!) She said that Butter is the only one who showed signs, but all were bathed just in case. She said Butter already looks alot better. It is very treatable, which is great! We are being very careful with handling them and washing well, but they should be over it soon, if they aren't already. She didn't say how long the vet said it would be before the fungus would be gone. I'll have to ask when I go over there tonight.
