I'm planning to go on a guinea pig convention with my piggies. It will be their first time to go on such a trip, and I'm a little worried knowing that pigs are scared of new things. So here are my questions;

1.) How long is it okay for them to stay in a pet carrier? I wouldn't really mind leaving the convention early, specially if it's for their own health. I live in a tropical country so depending on the weather (usually sunny/rainy/humid), I'm mostly worried about the heat.

2.) What's the best type of carrier? The two door type seems practical but I read reviews that the top door easily opens, I worry that when i carry them using the top handle, the door would randomly open. Then again, I could just carry from the side...

3.) I can't think of a number three at the moment...

The get together was originally a guinea pig show, but now it's open for all. They told me that mix breeds or those who don't have papers can also join in the other contest. We're joining the costume contest :D
Other than that, I just want to go there to know more about where to buy what, it's pretty hard to find good piggy stuff here.

How long will they be in a carrier and will you be in an air conditioned car on the way there? I wouldn't bring them along if it's hot and you have no air conditioning for the ride there. If you're looking for products for them, I think I'd go without them and concentrate on finding things that you might not be able to find any other time. You won't have to worry about caring for them while you're there and be more free to move around.

Thanks! It's 45 minutes going there, possibly an hour or two staying in the venue, and then another 45 minutes going back. Air conditioned car. I won't necessarily go around shopping and looking at stuff (if there will be any), I'm more after the experience :)

I volunteer with a guinea pig rescue and we have events where we can bring our guinea pigs along. There's a guinea pig costume contest at our open house and relay races at our "pig"nic. I'm always helping at the events so I never bring my guinea pigs along because I'm going to be tied up. If I was able to have have a pen where they could run and be supervised by me at all times, I might bring them. I'm never about them being somewhere without me watching them. Our pignic is in the summer so it's usually really hot outdoors, too, and I wouldn't want them out in the hot sun. I'd just weigh pros and cons and make a decision based on whether there is any risk to them.

As long as they don't get too hot, they should be fine. Guinea pigs usually travel quite well if the temperature is comfortable. They can get heat stroke rather quickly.

I have a carrier with the wire top that opens, and it's only opened once when I hadn't secured it properly, but only one of the latches opened so the pigs were unharmed. It's my favorite carrier, mostly because of the ease of taking the pigs out and also I can see them easily.

At an adoption event here once I saw someone with one of those stroller type carriers for small dogs--they had a pair of pigs in it and they were happily munching away on greens.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Any time I travel with pigs I give them lots of greens, since you can't attach the water bottle while moving since the vibrations will cause it to leak and your pigs will get soaked.

Great! Thanks for the advice! :D
